Role: Enablement Support Worker
Salary: Grade F. £30,024 - £32,597 plus 2026/7 pay award once agreed
Location: Council House
Hours: 37 hours a week, including occasional planned evening and weekend working
Closing Date: 11/05/2026
Contract Type: Permanent

Deaf Independence, Derby (DID) is part of the Derby City Council’s Deaf Team. If you


• have experience of working in the community with Deaf people who have learning disabilities, neurodiversity or mental health needs
• can adapt your fluent British Sign Language (BSL) to communicate with people who have different communication needs
• and are committed to empowering Deaf people to develop their independence, daily living skills and achieve their goals
this Enablement Support Worker role may be the right role for you.

This is a rare opportunity to join our team of both deaf and hearing colleagues, who are based in open plan offices in the Council House. This role involves supporting customer in their homes across Derby and in the community, therefore being independently mobile is essential. The role will require occasional planned evening and Saturday working.

The Opportunity
In the role of Enablement Support Worker with the Deaf Team, here’s an example of what you’ll be doing to make an impact:

As an Enablement Support worker, you will work with deaf people to achieve their goals. This could be short term involvement with a Deaf adult or child, to develop skills such as managing a first home or building their confidence to travel independently. It could be long-term involvement enabling a Deaf adult with a learning disability to gradually develop safe cooking skills, manage their money and maintain contact with their family. It could be working alongside mental health colleagues to support someone’s mental wellbeing and help them manage their medication.


You will be working independently but will have regular opportunities to meet with your team and develop your skills through training, supervision and team meetings.

About You
To be successful in this role, you’ll ideally have…

Excellent British Sign Language skills and the ability to adapt your communication when working with people whose language and communication is less well developed

Experience of working with deaf people with a range of support needs

Ability to work with individuals and groups to maximise independence, well-being and access to the community
Ability to work independently and as part of a team, remaining motivated and person centred
Ability to cope with demanding and stressful situations and behaviour that challenges
Commitment to providing a professional, high quality, confidential service

Ability to follow support plans, rotas and instructions

Ability to clearly and accurately record your work in the person’s home and on electronic records

Ability to work flexibly, adapting to the needs of the people supported by the team
