Senior Charge Nurse / Senior Sister

To have an overview at all times of the capacity situation within the directorate and be able to work creatively and independently to manage this in times of high demand ensuring neonates are repatriated to their host organisations as per network care pathway.

To utilise advanced communication skills, including verbal and written when dealing with highly charged and complex situations- i.e: discussing with parents the potential transfer of their baby.

To effectively capture any delays/cancellations in treatments/referrals/transfers and advise/update senior managers on clinical and operational issues.

To maintain regular personal contact with babies and their families, being courteous and sensitive to their needs for respect, privacy and dignity. To act as an effective role model ensuring a family-friendly environment at all times.


Main duties of the job

Provide effective leadership and management to staff which promotes the Trust's values and high performance standards both individually and as a team, in the achievement of the Trust's objectives and priorities. The Trust's success will be dependent on all managers playing an active role to make sure the existing areas of good employment practice are universally embedded within the organisation. Managers will be expected to:

Understand the Trust's key priorities and those of your Department and how these translate within your area/team.

Ensure clarity and effectiveness in developing and designing roles.

Ensure management of staff is consistent with Trust's Values to the achievement of equality, equity and optimum performance.

Complete annual Appraisals for all staff which reflect these priorities and ensure staff have access to appropriate training and development.

Communicate regularly through meetings with teams and individuals and provide opportunity for two-way feedback. Promote an effective team ethos.

Promote equality, diversity and rights, and treat others with dignity and respect ensuring services are developed, managed and delivered to meet the specific needs of those belonging to protected characteristics.

Person Specification


QUALIFICATIONS

* Current NMC/HCPC registration or registered healthcare practitioner
* Educated to degree level or Study at level 7
* Educated to degree level or Study at level 7 Neonatal course (Qualified in Specialty) or equivalent
* Course in management/approved management training
* Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) Instructor or European Paediatric Life Support (EPLS) Instructor or willingness to undertake
* Advanced Life Support (ALS) Instructor
* Paediatric Immediate Life Support (PILS) or willingness to undertake


KNOWLEDGE & NATURE OF EXPERIENCE

* Experience working in a Neonatal Setting, with extreme preterm, preterm and term babies
* Evidence of contribution to curriculum planning and course development
* Evidence of formal/informal teaching which has influenced patient care
* Ability to manage/work within a multidisciplinary team
* Evidence of clinical and managerial development
* Commitment to practicing, monitoring and teaching to a high standard of clinical care
* An understanding of current issues in education and practice including trust initiatives, knowledge of NMC/HCPC developments and their implications on practice
* Evidence of experience in patient safety and investigations including report writing
* Awareness of the national Trust and agendas


ANALYTICAL AND JUDGEMENT SKILLS

* Ability to understand and respond in emergencies
* Ability to work on own initiative
* Values accuracy and attention to detail
* Methodical and well organised
* Willing to develop skills and knowledge


PROFESSIONAL / MANAGERIAL / SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE

* Awareness of current research, development and evidence-based practice
* Evidence of ability to confront challenging issues taking a problemsolving approach, knowledge of change management and ability to implement
* Ability to produce clear, accurate, written, verbal and electronic reports
* Ability to put current research into practice and bring about change


PERSONAL SKILLS / ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES

* Ability to use the prioritise and plan workload and capacity in line with the service and organizational needs
* Has experience in data inputting into excel, access databases etc.
* Excellent Interpersonal and communication skills
* Work within education and learning and the WDD team.
