Job overview
The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital is seeking to recruit a Consultant Spinal Deformity Surgeon to maintain capacity and improve delivery of high-quality spinal surgery. The Consultant will join a surgical team of orthopaedic and neurosurgical spinal surgeons, working with colleagues to ensure and enhance effective patient-centred care.
The department undertakes a comprehensive range of surgical procedures with particular expertise in reconstructive surgery for tumour, trauma, infection, and deformity.
The appointee will have a particular interest in paediatric spinal deformity surgery. It is our intent to develop innovative and less invasive methods of deformity correction. Extensive experience with robotics, navigation, thoracoscopic surgery, and an international spinal fellowship (minimum three months of international work as a fellow) is highly desirable.
Main duties of the job
* Perform a wide range of surgical procedures with expertise in reconstructive surgery for tumour, trauma, infection, and deformity.
* Focus on paediatric spinal deformity surgery and develop less invasive correction methods, utilizing robotics, navigation, and thoracoscopic techniques.
* Deliver adult spinal deformity and degenerative spinal surgery, participate in a comprehensive spinal on-call service (no intradural surgery required).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
* Complete orthopaedic training and spinal fellowship, with interest in adult and paediatric deformity surgery. Join the spinal on-call rota covering West Midlands and Worcestershire, with an on-call intensity of 1:13. The rota is separate from the rest of the hospital, with no non-spinal orthopaedic coverage required.
* Initial job plan of approximately 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), including theatre lists, outpatient clinics, MDT meetings, and administrative duties. Support for professional activities and other activities such as teaching, research, and governance is also included.
* Travel between hospital sites is compensated, and on-call commitments are remunerated. Job plan diaries are required for appropriate remuneration.

Qualifications and training
* Full GMC Registration
* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Trauma and Orthopaedics (CCT or CESR within six months of interview), or European Community Rights
* FRCS (Trauma & Orth)
* Prizes, awards, research, presentations, and publications
Experience
* Substantial post-CCT spinal surgical training, especially in deformity surgery
* International spinal fellowship experience
* Experience in audit, investigation, and computer literacy
* Preferably 8+ years as a consultant
Knowledge
* Ability to handle stressful situations and responsibilities
* Organisational and communication skills
* Leadership, teamwork, and clinical governance experience
* Proficiency in anterior spinal surgery, navigated, robotic, and thoracoscopic techniques
