MDE are working with a leading investor and developer in the energy infrastructure space, supporting the expansion of their project delivery function. The company is focused on the development and execution of large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects, typically 50MW+ in capacity and often involving complex transmission network connections.
Role
The Project Manager will operate client-side, leading the planning, coordination, and execution of grid-scale battery storage projects from early development through to construction and commissioning. The role involves overseeing the delivery of high-voltage, grid-connected BESS projects, managing interfaces with contractors, DNOs, and other key stakeholders, and ensuring that project milestones, budgets, and quality standards are consistently met. The Project Manager will be responsible for driving progress through all project phases, including development, design, procurement, and construction.
While experience in transmission-level infrastructure is highly desirable, the company also welcomes applications from candidates with an electrical engineering or commissioning background - particularly those with experience delivering high-voltage assets. This is a key opportunity to play an integral role in the UK’s energy transition, supporting the delivery of next-generation energy storage solutions across multiple high-impact projects.
Key Responsibilities:
* Lead the full project lifecycle of BESS projects connected to the UK transmission or distribution networks
* Manage project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and risk management across all delivery phases
* Serve as the principal point of contact between internal teams, EPC contractors, National Grid, and other key stakeholders
* Ensure projects meet regulatory compliance requirements, including National Grid and NESO standards
* Coordinate across internal functions (engineering, procurement, legal, HSE, finance) to ensure project alignment
* Support the management of Transmission Entry Capacity (TEC) milestones and connection processes
* Oversee contractor performance, site progress, and adherence to health, safety, and environmental standards
* Identify and resolve issues related to grid connection, land rights, permits, and commercial interfaces
* Provide regular project reporting to senior management and investment stakeholders
* Ensure successful handover into commissioning and operations
Qualifications & Experience:
* Degree-qualified in Electrical Engineering, Energy Systems, Project Management, or a related discipline
* 7–10+ years’ experience managing utility-scale infrastructure or renewable energy projects
* Direct experience with BESS, HV substations, grid connections, or transmission-level assets
* Familiarity with National Grid processes, NESO frameworks, and UK regulatory standards
* Strong knowledge of project controls, contract management, and health & safety best practices
* Skilled in managing EPC and subcontractor relationships
* Excellent stakeholder management and cross-functional coordination skills
* Proficiency in project delivery tools (MS Project, Primavera, etc.)
* Flexibility to travel to project sites and interface with stakeholders across the UK
* PMP or APM certification is advantageous
