Job Description

About the Role

Put simply, we set the standards by which everything is measured. In doing so, the Physical Laboratory is helping to combat issues on a global scale such as climate change, curing diseases, and the development of cutting-edge communications technology. At NPL, we touch ordinary lives in extraordinary ways, and you could too.

NPL is looking for a senior expert with demonstrable, world-leading experience in Underwater Acoustics to join us as a Principal Scientist. Research drives our business. It will be up to you to develop and lead your team, set your technical area's strategic direction, and ensure your vision is delivered. You don’t rely solely on established methodologies; you challenge existing practices to expand our capabilities. You will also drive collaboration internally and externally to enhance activities and optimize commercial opportunities. Your passion for your work, along with your extensive network, will help promote our work, representing NPL and speaking at various events. As your work progresses, you will ensure the team grows with you through training and development.

The responsibilities of the Principal Scientist within Underwater Acoustics include:

1. Leading, designing, and executing experimental and theoretical research, including developing novel measurement tools and methods for underwater acoustic applications.
2. Creating a vision for underwater acoustics within the Ultrasound & Underwater Acoustics Group, addressing UK government challenges.
3. Representing NPL and the UK on international standards committees and meetings.
4. Engaging with UK and overseas organizations (Metrology Institutes, UK Government, Academia, and Commercial Customers) to maintain NPL’s position as a leading NMI in underwater acoustics.
5. Responding to commercial and grant-based ITTs and securing research funding aligned with NPL’s strategic priorities.
6. Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to improve methods and tools for underwater acoustic applications and developing traceable tools for future use.
7. Partnering with other NPL departments and developing new research and service opportunities, including establishing collaborations and nurturing existing partnerships.
8. Managing science portfolios, developing project proposals, overseeing project execution, and building partnerships.
9. Working with industry partners to establish collaborative agreements, create innovative research programs, and transfer successes to industry.

The role is based at NPL's Teddington site, involving occasional travel for customer site visits, in situ measurements, and representing NPL at international meetings, conferences, and events.

About You

To succeed, you will be an internationally respected expert in underwater acoustics, with experience in:

* Winning, leading, and conducting international research published in recognized scientific journals.
* Leading or contributing to underwater acoustics standards development.
* Developing and implementing technical solutions funded by civil and defense sectors.
* Presenting results through reports, manuscripts, and oral presentations.
* Developing and executing business strategies for technical initiatives.
* Managing large-scale research programs throughout their lifecycle.
* Leading and motivating scientific and technical staff.

You should be inspirational, influential, and a relationship builder, with the scientific and commercial acumen to help NPL achieve its ambitions. We value diversity and are committed to equal opportunities. To work in this role, you will need an SC clearance or the ability to obtain one.

Please note: Applications are reviewed continuously, and the closing date may be brought forward. We encourage interested applicants to apply promptly.
