SEN Teaching Assistant - Rochdale
A specialist SEN primary school in Rochdale is seeking a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to support pupils with autism, speech, language and communication needs, and SEMH. This is a full‑time role supporting primary‑aged pupils who present with a wide range of needs, from non‑verbal or limited communication to pupils who have experienced trauma and require strong emotional and behavioural support.
The school places a strong emphasis on rewarding positive behaviour and building trusting relationships with pupils. Learning is active and engaging, with a focus on physical and outdoor learning where appropriate.
As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with pupils throughout the school day, supporting both learning and emotional regulation. Many pupils benefit from consistent routines, clear boundaries and positive role models. The school encourages practical, hands‑on learning and encourages pupils to access outdoor spaces as part of their education.
You may support pupils on a 1:1 basis or within small groups, helping them communicate, regulate emotions and engage positively with learning activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Support primary‑aged pupils with autism, SLCN and SEMH needs
- Work with pupils who are non‑verbal or have limited communication
- Support pupils who have experienced trauma or emotional challenges
- Use visual supports, communication tools and structured routines
- Reinforce positive behaviour and celebrate pupil progress
- Support learning through physical, practical and outdoor activities
- Build strong, consistent relationships with pupils
- Work collaboratively with teachers and support staff

- SEN or primary school experience
- SEMH or trauma‑informed settings
- Youth Work, Support Work or care roles
- Sports coaching or active, physical roles
