ODN Nurse Educator

We have an opportunity for a motivated and confident individual to join our Northern Neonatal Network as a Nurse Educator.

Are you an experienced neonatal nurse, who wants to transition into education/teaching, or an established neonatal educator who would like to work across the NNN to develop consistency and assurance of education provided? If so, come and work at the NNN.

The Nurse Educator will undertake the lead role in delivering education, training, and practice development across neonatal services within the ODN. You will be responsible for leading in the planning and provision of educational events to meet the objectives of the Network. This will also include the stabilisation programme, working closely with the Lead for Education.

This role also has a requirement to ensure the ODN have quality assurance of the education provided by external providers including Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Compliance with the QIS Standards is critical and this post will work with all parties to ensure that local offerings are fit for purpose. This requires the post holder to work locally with education providers, unit managers and unit educators.


Main duties of the job

The role is a fixed term / secondment contract of 1 year. It is predominantly home based with the expectation of travel to NNN office at Sunderland Royal Hospital, and all neonatal units within the NNN. Regional and national travel will also be part of this role, working with the National Educators Forum, disseminating new initiatives, and being a point of contact for all NNN nursing education queries.

This role is within the NNN, it will cover education provision in all 10 neonatal units within the NENC.

The main duty is to work across the region to embed a sustainable Qualified In Speciality Course (QIS) which meets the full recommendations in the published national standards. This includes mapping current provision of training for neonatal nurses, scoping of alternative future pathways if required, programme evaluation/re‑design to ensure the NNN ODN is assured of the quality of all education, mapping of placement capacity within NICs in NNN to include Practice Assessor/Practice Supervisor provision. The priority for this role is to embed the QIS programme and support unit‑based educators with this.

This role also has a requirement to ensure quality assurance of the education provided by completion of QIS implementation matrix and other quality assurance measures.

There is an expectation that with other members of the NNN team you will actively support implementing agreed pathways of care and provide associated training.

Skills & Knowledge

* Excellent and updated knowledge and understanding of the local region, neonatal units and pathways.
* Strategic vision and operational implementation.
* Ability to translate national policy into service improvement.
* Clear understanding of National Policy and current issues affecting neonatal services.
* Understanding of clinical governance issues in the delivery of care.
* Effective advanced communication skills
* Excellent relevant neonatal clinical skills
* Excellent leadership and organizational skills
* Able to motivate and develop a multi-professional team.
* Self‑discipline and good time management to support periods of lone working.
* Ability to delegate and prioritise.
* Ability to work within a highly productive team.
* Excellent verbal and written communication and listening skills.
* Excellent teaching, training, and preceptorship skills.
* Able to work across professional team and organisational boundaries.
* Detailed understanding of resource management, health and safety, clinical risk and quality issues.


Experience

* Extensive and recent clinical experience at a senior level.
* Experience of teaching clinical neonatal nursing skills.
* Experience of classroom or formal teaching and presenting.
* Experience of simulation scenario teaching.
* Previous experience of research and audit.
* Previous experience of change management and problem solving.


Qualifications

* Current NMC Registration.
* Is in possession of a relevant masters degree or in the process of completing.
* Evidence of ongoing, dynamic continuing professional development within the specialty.
* Recordable teaching/assessing qualification.
* Qualified in Specialty.
* NLS instructor.


Physical Skills

* Car driver with ability to travel to all parts of the region.
* Ability to sit at workstations as necessary to undertake written reviews, arrange meetings and to take part in Teams meetings.
* Requirement for computer use so manual dexterity and computing skills.
* Ability to motivate and influence.
* Articulate and confident.
