The Director of Medical Education (DME) is a senior clinical leader in the Trust, reporting to the Chief Medical Officer to ensure that medical education is fully integrated with the delivery and future requirements of the service both operationally and strategically. Education is a core NHS responsibility, on a par with clinical activity, and as such the DME must ensure robust governance policies and procedures are in place.
The DME will be responsible for leading the development of first-class educational environment to attract and retain approved training posts The DME will develop and enhance the teaching and training skills of existing medical staff. The post comes with the offer of external mentoring by an experienced Director of Medical Education outside of the organisation, facilitated by NHS E.
Main duties of the job
Director Medical Education
1. The DME will provide strategic educational leadership to all involved in medical education, ensuring that high quality medical education is fully integrated within Clinical Groups and across the Trust with an appropriate balance of training opportunity and service delivery.
2. Build and maintain strong working relationships with Consultants representing their views on education and training to NHSE, ensuring that there is a good balance between education and service in the structure of NHSE rotations.
3. The DME will be responsible for ensuring that high quality postgraduate medical education is an integral part of the Trust strategic objectives.
4. Will lead on the development the PGME strategy ensuring that the Trust values and operational plans are reflected in the objectives which are set.
5. Create and maintain governance structures that provide assurance to the Board and external parties (NHSE and General Medical Council) that doctors in post graduate training is of high quality and is meeting the needs of the future workforce.

We provide care for the residents of three diverse London boroughs. Most of our 7,800 permanent staff live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge and the majority are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.
Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals and we operate from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London - more than 300,000 people visited our A& E in 2023. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Community Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic.
We're pleased to be leading the way in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need. The Elective Surgical Hub at King George Hospital is one of eight to be accredited as part of a national scheme the Care Quality Commission has raised the ratings for urgent and emergency car eat Queen's and King George hospitals and data released by NHS England showed that the Trust was the most improved in 2023 for reducing waits for emergency care.
We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre Radiotherapy Centre Hyper Acute Stroke Unit and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We're also part of the North East London Cancer Alliance.

Job responsibilities
6. Be responsible for ensuring the Trust achieves compliance against the GMC national training standard for Educational and Clinical Supervisors
7. Ensure appropriate systems are in place within Clinical Groups for the appointment Speciality Education Leads. In addition, ensuring Leads are appraised in their role appropriately and Clinical Directors receive feedback of good and poor performance.
8. Work collaboratively with the Guardian of Safe Working to ensure that compliance with the junior doctor contract (2016) requirements in rest, safety, and educational needs are met.
9. Proactively liaise with other educational leaders to promote multi-professional education within the Trust.
10. Ensure that Medical Education is integrated with other Educational Strategies and in terms of team working to improve interprofessional learning activities and develop supportive working.
11. The wider role of Directors of PGME involves participating in Deanery meetings Deans monitoring visits and representing the Deanery at appointments committees.
12. Full GMC registration - Minimum of 5 years experience as a Consultant
13. Minimum of 5 years experience in a senior medical education role, e.g. Postgraduate Clinical Tutor, Royal College Advisor, Specialty Tutor
14. Knowledge of management structures in medical education and awareness of recent changes in the delivery of medical education, nationally and locally
Desirable
15. Postgraduate qualification in Education
16. Evidence of supporting trainees and trainers
17. Evidence of experience at strategic level of national and/or international education organisations
