Research Assistant/Associate in Evolutionary Biomechanics (Fixed Term)
The Research Assistant/Associate in Evolutionary Biomechanics (Fixed Term) position is a 36‑month appointment within the ERC Starting Grant project STEPS: Biomechanical simulations of hominin locomotion across complex terrains led by Principal Investigator Dr Ashleigh Wiseman at the University of Cambridge.
STEPS is a five‑year interdisciplinary project (2025‑2030) combining human evolution, evolutionary biomechanics, and comparative anatomy to investigate the selective pressures that produced the human‑like body plan. The research integrates experimental studies of human movement with computational models to explore how anatomy and environmental challenges shaped the evolution of bipedalism.
Responsibilities
* Collect and analyse biomechanical data from experimental movements and fossil specimens.
* Construct and validate musculoskeletal models for human and hominin locomotion.
* Contribute to movement simulations and interpretation of evolutionary implications.
* Collaborate with the core team and independent international partners.
* Participate in research trips to the US, Kenya, and South Africa as required.
* Share data, methods, and ideas effectively within a diverse, interdisciplinary team.
Requirements
Successful applicants will be rigorous, creative, and collaborative researchers with a strong background in biomechanics, evolutionary biology, anthropology, or a related field. Experience in musculoskeletal modelling and fossil analysis is highly desirable.
