Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth, strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.

DJJ is seeking a Violence Intervention Specialist. This role will develop, implement, and monitor gang and violence intervention program planning for reduced recidivism and improved intervention services, and ensures appropriate allocation of services and personnel in support of program objectives.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

1. Ability to utilize Microsoft and other computer software including spreadsheets, word processing, data bases, and presentation packages.
2. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff from various levels of agency operations.
3. Ability to develop and plan policies, standards, regulations, legislation, goals, and strategies; to interpret data, policies and procedures and make recommendations related to management and operational issues and resource deployment.

This position will be responsible for working at the Bon Air JCC 2-3 days a week as well as travel to central office, detention centers, and alternative placements on the remaining days. This position will also require consistent work outside of normal business hours 11:00 am-8:00 pm, some holidays and weekends.

Minimum Qualifications

4. Comprehensive knowledge of the juvenile justice system; case management guidelines, and juvenile justice program development.
5. Considerable knowledge and experience directly supervising youth on supervision status, at-risk, and delinquent, extensive history working with service providers, alternate placements, and detention center staff.
6. Considerable background in gang intervention or gun violence programming.
7. Demonstrated ability to independently gather and interpret data, draw conclusions, and implement solutions; write grants; clearly present information in written and verbal formats; manage multiple tasks and projects; work independently.

Additional Considerations

8. Considerable work experience and/or training in research, public administration, criminal justice, or a related field.
