Electrical Manager at Serco

UK Defence Academy, Swindon, SN6 8LA

Permanent, Full time. Mon‑Thurs 8am‑4pm, Fri 8am‑3:30pm.

Salary: Up to £45,000 depending on experience.


Job Description

Serco has an exciting opportunity for an Electrical Manager to join the Estates Department at the UK Defence Academy. Serco is contracted to provide Total Facilities Management to the Defence Academy of the UK (DA). This prestigious establishment is responsible for post‑graduate education and the majority of the command, staff, leadership, defence management, acquisition and technology training for members of the UK Armed Forces and MOD Civil Servants. Serco supports the DA as the MOD's primary link with UK universities and international military educational institutions.

As the Electrical Manager you will manage a team to deliver electrical operations across the estate and be accountable for the in‑house electrical team, subcontractors, work planner and work controllers to ensure Serco meets its contractual requirements.


Main Responsibilities

* Lead the electrical department by example, ensuring teamwork and staff morale are maintained and enhanced.
* Responsibility for the development and delivery of all sites electrical pre‑planned maintenance (PPM), remedial works and reactive maintenance, including all HV and LV works, PAT testing, electronic access systems and site security equipment.
* Undertake leadership and engagement activities across the site.
* Conduct staff appraisals, absence management and disciplinary procedures for electrical department staff.
* Act as technical lead on site for all electrical matters relating to infrastructure, liaising with Mechanical and Build managers to ensure smooth cross‑discipline collaboration.
* Ensure site compliance with JSP375 Chap 3 for all on‑site electrical works.
* Report non‑compliance to the Hard FM Operations manager.
* Maintain full compliance with the Serco Management System policies for the electrical department.
* Review and sign off all Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICR) for site and Service Families Accommodation (SFA).
* Manage the skilled persons register for the electrical discipline.
* Liaise and advise the Project Management (PM) department on electrical matters.
* Ensure Health and Safety compliance for the property campus, delivering safe methods of working (contractor control, permits to works, etc.).
* Validate electrical assets for the estate’s property portfolio.
* Use the Computer Aided Facilities Management (CAFM) system to demonstrate statutory compliance; training is provided.
* Reconcile all electrical invoices to ensure they are complete and in line with contract terms.
* Work positively with other Serco personnel to maintain productivity and a good working environment.
* Maintain confidentiality of all information.
* Adhere to all company protocols and procedures.
* Develop electrical supply chain contracts, ensuring terms, specifications and rate cards are applied to work tasks.

Essential Skills

* High level of common sense; able to produce simple solutions to complex issues.
* Demonstrate clear decision making in a timely manner based on facts and sound rationale.
* High level of interpersonal skills; able to communicate at all levels both orally and in the written word. Able to motivate others to succeed.
* A relevant formal qualification in electrical engineering and/or building services engineering.
* Use of FM CAFM Systems.
* Line management experience with a high level of motivation, energy, drive and enthusiasm, focused on others. Ability to lead by example.
* CDM knowledge and experience.
* Thorough knowledge and application of H&S and Environmental matters relevant to the construction industry.
* Detailed understanding of relevant regulations, legislation and standards relating to the electrical industry.
* Excellent planning and organisational ability with an analytical, financial and numerate approach to problems.
* Proficient time management skills to meet demanding programmes of work.
* Highly literate and experienced with IT, demonstrating ability in MS Office – including Email, Outlook, Word and Excel.


Desirable Skills

* Demonstrable experience in a similar role at manager level.
* IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH General Certificate.
* Experience of property standards such as SFG20, CIBSE Guide M, etc.
* Membership of relevant professional institution (e.g. CIBSE, IET).
* Previous MOD experience with an ability to demonstrate clear understanding of relevant MOD JSPs – Highly Desirable.

Security Clearance
