Job Summary
We have an exciting opportunity for a highly autonomous and experienced Sonographer, who is practising at the top of their licence and can evidence of the four pillars of Advanced Clinical Practice, to join our diverse team as General Specialist Practitioner Sonographer.
Position based at the Royal London Hospital with cross‑site rotation to St Bartholomew’s Hospital, Mile End Hospital Community Diagnostic Centre and Early Diagnostic Centre. The role is 7‑day working pattern with compressed hours over 4 weekdays and some weekend working.
80% Direct Clinical Contact (DCC) and 20% Supporting Professional Activities (SPA). The role supports upskilling and training of sonographers to improve the skill mix in General ultrasound, and improves patient outcomes by reducing waiting times to meet National targets, DM01 and Faster Diagnostic Service (FDS). Leading quality improvement, audit and research projects is expected.
£5K RRP per year subject to approval. 150 hours per month – compressed hours over 4 weekdays and some weekend working.
Responsibilities
* Manage the pathway for patients referred for more complex ultrasound scans in the following specialties: Paediatrics, Gynaecology, Head and Neck, MSK and General.
* Perform high‑level autonomous clinical practice, including CEUS, Head and Neck FNAs and ultrasound‑guided procedures.
* Lead quality improvement, audit and research projects to meet national service targets.
* Provide supervision and training to sonographers to improve skill mix.
* Attend multidisciplinary team meetings and contribute to service development.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
* BSc (Hons) or DCR in Diagnostic Radiography or other healthcare qualification.
* CASE accredited post‑graduate qualification in Medical Ultrasound.
* Current statutory registration with the HCPC or other UK regulatory body (e.g. NMC or GMC).
* Managerial / Leadership qualification or equivalent knowledge and experience.
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
* MSc in Medical Ultrasound or equivalent knowledge and experience.
* Project Management Qualification.
* PG Cert in Education / Academic Practice.
* MSc in Advanced Practice or achievement of e‑portfolio accreditation route.
Essential Skills
* Specialty expert and extended scope of practice in relevant subspecialty (e.g. paediatrics, hips, transplant kidneys, elastography, CEUS, Head and Neck FNAs).
* High‑level interpersonal and communication skills.
* Working towards or having already gained and maintained the 4 pillars of advanced practice.
* Collaborative working with other disciplines.
* High level of work organisation, self‑motivation, drive for performance and improvement and flexibility in approach and attitude.
* Ability to deal with conflict and stressful situations.

* Up to date knowledge of current and emerging ultrasound techniques and relevant professional issues.
* Knowledge of current policies and legislation affecting service delivery.
* Good understanding of clinical governance and risk management.
Desirable Knowledge
* Participation experience of NHS leadership programs.
