Job overview

Job Summary

To provide occupational therapy assessment, treatment and review of service users under the early intervention team.

You will be expected to use your own initiative and clinical skills to plan and carry out treatment, run treatment groups and to contribute to the MDT management and treatment of our service users.


Main duties of the job

Main Duties &Responsibilities

* To carry out appropriate OT assessment and treatment of allocated patients.
* To plan, conduct and participate in various treatment sessions in response to assessment and need.
* To provide clinical and other support to multidisciplinary team.
* To carry out 1:1 and group sessions.
* To work in close liaison with other disciplines involved in the care and treatment of patients allocated to you.
* To provide in-service training.
* To develop and maintain community links to increase social inclusion and community integration.
* To maintain strict confidentiality regarding any information concerning patients.
* To establish and maintain professional relationships with patients, their relations and friends and to support and promote patients’ rights and identity.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The core purpose of this role is to work within the Early Intervention Team to embed the Occupational Therapy assessment and intervention pathway across the service within the framework of Model of Human Occupation (MOHO), in collaboration with the wider MDT staff and work towards a recovery focused ethos. The post holder will function as part of the MDT to deliver the Interventions required to support individuals through the early intervention service pathway and equip them with the skills and confidence to enable a safe discharge from the service. This role could also involve crisis work, all aspects of the role will be brief and time limited, but will aim to retain an occupational focus. The post holder will be highly skilled and competent in conducting OT assessments developing outcome based needs led care plans, facilitating the implementation of the agreed plan of care and evaluating its effectiveness utilising evidence based outcome measures. The post holder will provide a range of highly skilled interventions that will be delivered on both a group and individual basis and share those skills with other team members.

Education/Qualifications


Essential criteria

* Diploma / Degree in Occupational Therapy.
* Registered with HCPC
* Short courses and experience to post graduate diploma level.
* Willingness to undertake further training relevant to management, leadership and practitioner roles resulting from legislative or service changes, as appropriate.


Desirable criteria

* Evidence of post qualification academic achievement in the relevant area for this post.
* Degree level qualification
* Training in MOHO


Experience


Essential criteria

* Substantial post registration experience working in a mental health service.
* Experience in working with people with severe and complex mental health needs
* Experience of MDT working
* Experience of working with people in crisis


Desirable criteria

* Experience of managing or participating in change
* Leadership experience
* Experience of working in a community setting
* Experience of supervision
* Crisis Team / HTT experience


Knowledge


Essential criteria

* Extensive knowledge / experience in social inclusion and recovery model of care.
* Sound understanding of current local and national policies in relation to Mental Health including the Mental Health Act, Risk Assessment and Management processes and CPA processes
* Good working knowledge of assessment, care planning, implementation and evaluation processes
* Comprehensive knowledge of mental health conditions and how they impact on an individual’s wellbeing and occupational functioning
* Comprehensive knowledge of broad range of interventions required to support individuals with severe and complex mental health needs


Desirable criteria

* Knowledge of MOHO and its’ assessment tools.
* Knowledge of the occupational context of community mental health services and its’ application to assessment and treatment
* Knowledge of Star Recovery Tool


Skills and abilities


Essential criteria

* Ability to manage and prioritise own workload.
* Ability to work effectively as part of a MDT
* Ability to demonstrate specialist expertise in assessment using MOHO
* Ability to deliver a range of evidence based interventions on both an individual and group basis
* Ability to supervise junior staff / students
* Effective time management
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Recording relevant documentation to a professional standard.
* Ability to communicate with and develop supportive relationships with patients, carers and other professionals
* Ability to value diversity and respond constructively to discriminatory behaviour.
* Ability to provide professional expertise in the care of mental health service users.
* Ability to provide appropriate education and training to peers and assistant as appropriate.
* Computer literacy.
* Flexible and adaptable.


Desirable criteria

* Interest in engaging in OT service development with the recognised Trust work streams
* Ability to audit outcomes of assessments and OT service provided.
