The Peterborough site is part of the Southeast Superhub, opened in 2018 with 13 stories of advanced cold storage. Phase 3 expanded the facility in May 2022 with an additional 45,300 pallet positions, and Phase 4 is planned for future growth. Key highlights include 25,600 pallet positions in Phases 1 & 2, 7 automated cranes, 6 inbound lanes, 8 double‑dispatch lanes, automated vehicle offloading, and full‑site automation for up to 4 500 pallet movements daily. Operations run 24/7 with flexible working patterns.
The Role
We are seeking a Mechanics‑Skilled Engineer to join our growing engineering team at a state‑of‑the‑art Peterborough site. The role provides a dynamic, high‑tech environment for developing your mechanical or electrical maintenance skills. You will maintain automated systems, refrigeration equipment, and site infrastructure, ensuring continuous operation in a collaborative, safety‑focused team.
Shift Pattern Available: 4 on / 4 off Nights, 18:00‑06:00
Salary: Negotiable
Responsibilities
* Diagnose and resolve failures across mechanical, electrical and automated systems (cranes, conveyors, refrigeration, utilities) and implement sustainable fixes.
* Conduct planned preventative maintenance (PPM) to reduce downtime and extend equipment life.
* Inspect and maintain Coldstore systems to stay within temperature thresholds, support refrigeration servicing schedules and report deviations promptly.
* Serve as first contact for automation or yard system issues, liaising with controls/automation engineers as needed.
* Accurately complete maintenance logs, job sheets and WMS entries for traceability and compliance.
* Maintain tools and workspaces: keep them safe, PAT‑compliant and organized.
* Manage parts and stock levels with the Maintenance Manager to avoid reactive/ planned maintenance delays.
* Adhere to health & safety protocols, food safety standards (HACCP) and environmental policies; report unsafe situations.
* Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives for reliability, maintenance practices and operational efficiency.
Who We’re Looking For
* Recognised qualification in Mechanical Engineering; Electrical Engineering beneficial but not essential (NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, ONC/HNC or equivalent).
* Hands‑on experience in a maintenance role, preferably within an automated or logistics environment.
* Strong fault‑finding and problem‑solving skills for mechanical and electrical systems.
* Knowledge of food safety, health & safety legislation and best maintenance practices.
* Effective communicator in English with proactive, adaptable approach.
* Willing to work rotating shifts in a 24/7 operational schedule.
