Job Overview

The post holder will provide systemic input to the Adult Eating Disorders Service, which is made up of an inpatient ward, day programme, intensive community pathway and outpatient services. The post holder will work as part of the multi-disciplinary team which consists of Psychiatrists, Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, Dieticians, Systemic Therapists, Cognitive Behavioural Therapists, Cognitive Analytic Therapists. The post holder, together with the systemic therapists, will support the teams across the adult service to think systemically in case formulation and treatment plans, alongside holding a caseload of families.

Vincent Square Eating Disorder Service is an all age ED Service with a vibrant and skilled multidisciplinary team working across a a variety of evidence based treatment pathways targeted to the specific needs of different groups of patients.

Working for our organisation

The service is located in Kensington (London) and provides a range of eating disorder treatments including outpatient therapy, day patient services and inpatient care.

There are places for 14 inpatients and 12 day patients at any one time, as well as an extensive outpatient department. The service has links to the Institute of Psychiatry (King’s College London), Imperial College Medical School and Royal Holloway (University of London), and facilitates evidence-based therapies and clinical judgement. Our specialist staff include psychiatrists, nurses, clinical psychologists, psychotherapists, occupational therapists, and other appropriate clinicians.

For individuals aged 17 and below, we offer specialist eating disorder treatment via our newly established Child and Young People’s Service.

Eating Disorders is a specialism within children’s mental health, therefore finding candidates with rich experience is really important.

The team consists of nursing, psychology, assistant psychologists, systemic psychotherapists, a dietician, paediatrician and psychiatry. We are expanding! Watch the short videos of what our staff say about working at the service.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities


* To provide comprehensive and holistic assessments of clients, their families and/or carers that are referred to the Adult Service that synthesises information from a variety of sources.
* To hold a caseload that covers clients from different parts of the Adult Service.
* To be responsible for implementing, developing and evaluating systemic interventions for individuals and their families and/or carers. This includes signposting families and/or carers to community resources as well as supporting the team to develop a family-focused practice.
* To provide and help facilitate evidence based therapeutic groups for clients and their families and/or carers, both separately and conjointly. These include skills workshops and support groups for families, partners and those in the network surrounding the client, as well as community meetings on the inpatient ward and day programme.
* To help teams within the service to formulate and implement care plans for the treatment and management of the client based on using a systemic framework. This includes providing input in team meetings and ward rounds.
* To contribute directly and indirectly to a systemic framework of understanding and care to the benefit of all clients of the service, across all settings and agencies serving the client group.
* To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and their families and/or carers, and advice other professions in this area where appropriate
* To communicate assessment, formulation and treatment plans to individual clients and their families and/or carers in a collaborative and sensitive manner
* To monitor the progress of clients and be able to review the need to change the care plan where necessary
* To ensure that all services provided are acceptable and accessible to the diverse communities which make up all the boroughs in CNWL. At all times to work in ways that are sensitive to and appropriate for the needs of families from a wide range of racial, cultural and religious backgrounds, and to be aware and sensitive to the different contexts that shape different families experiences, beliefs and perceptions. This will include working with interpreters.
* Education and Development
* To receive regular clinical professional supervision from a senior family therapist and, where appropriate, other senior professional colleagues.
* To complete and stay up to date with the CNWL mandatory training programme annually and within the required timescales.
* To attend Staff Group with other colleagues in the service
* To attend the Family Therapy Forum for peer supervision, case discussion and opportunity for overall systemic learning and development

Person specification

Education And Qualifications

Essential criteria

* Postgraduate qualification in family psychotherapy
* State Registered Occupational Therapy, Registered Mental Health Nurse, Art Therapist, Doctoral Level training in Clinical Psychology as accredited by the BPS, CBT therapist

Desirable criteria

* Qualifying training in Family & Systemic psychotherapy

Previous Experience

Essential criteria

* Experience of working therapeutically with families
* Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary context involving such agencies as social services, education, health and the voluntary sector
* Clinical work with adults, children and adolescents with a range of behavioural, emotional and family difficulties
* Experience of the use of a range of therapeutic approaches

Desirable criteria

* Experience of facilitating therapeutic group work
* Work in eating disorders
* Work in school setting.
* Liaison and consultation work.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria

* Knowledge of child development and assessment methods and procedures.
* Knowledge of systemic and other approaches to therapy
* The ability to elicit highly sensitive information, sometimes working with interpreters or advocates.
* The ability to offer reassurance and empathy to clients who may be in a state of distress.
* The ability to communicate sensitive information to a range of clinical cases
