Overview
Our Graduate Trainee Scheme includes financial support to become a qualified Chartered Accountant with ICAS. You will gain a prestigious, internationally recognised qualification whilst being involved in varied and interesting work auditing public bodies in Scotland.
What You Will Be Doing
* Help your team plan and deliver quality audit work across a range of public sector bodies
* Contribute to the development of audit reports and other outputs
* Undertake audit assignments in accordance with professional standards and the Code of Audit Practice
* Contribute to developing audit approaches, tools and techniques (e.g. sampling, data analytics, research and interviews) tailored to the audit scope
* Identify key points from audits to support sound judgements, conclusions and recommendations
* Contribute to drafting accurate, clear and concise audit reports
* Build relationships with staff in public bodies to ensure successful outcomes that add credibility and value
* Undertake a training programme to become a professionally qualified accountant and engage in a personal development programme
* Work across the organisation to provide specific expertise and contribute to audit work in other areas (including potential performance audit work)
* Challenge and support public bodies to demonstrate governance and improve accountability
* Help create a working environment that enables people to flourish and identify relationships with key stakeholders for risk understanding
* Maintain good relationships across Audit Scotland and participate in collaborative work with stakeholders
Knowledge and Experience
You don’t need to be an accountancy graduate or have a specific degree grade to join. Trainees come from a variety of backgrounds and study diverse subjects. What matters is strong analytical and people skills, commitment to studying for a professional qualification, and the ability to excel in a challenging role.
Essential Qualifications and Skills
* On track to achieve an honours degree or equivalent in any subject
* National 5 Grade C or GCSE Grade 4/C (or equivalent) in Maths and English
* Strong verbal and written communication to build and maintain relationships within audit teams, across Audit Scotland and with external stakeholders
* Self-aware with initiative and the ability to work independently
* Team-oriented with collaborative skills
* Commitment to studying for a professional qualification and ability to manage work and study
* Interest in Audit Scotland and/or the public sector and the auditing profession
* Analytical ability to interpret data and translate into clear audit reports
* Disciplined and well-organised with good project management to meet deadlines
About Audit Scotland
Our vision is that public money is well spent to meet the needs of Scotland's people. We support the Auditor General for Scotland and the Accounts Commission to provide clear, independent assurance on how public money is managed and spent. We employ around 340 staff across Scotland with trainee opportunities in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and Aberdeen. Trainees may work from home, in the office and at client sites.
