Materials Engineer Safran Landing Systems - Gloucester (UK) Hybrid About the role: The Materials & Processes Laboratory team based in Gloucester provides Materials & Process expertise on a wide variety of subjects and supports a broad range of internal customers. As well as supporting activities at a site level, the Gloucester Laboratory team work closely with other Materials & Processes Laboratories within Safran Landing Systems worldwide. This Materials Engineer role will require involvement in a broad range of laboratory duties with a focus on forensic investigation of landing gear parts. There will be scope to expand the range of activities to include supplier quality monitoring, support to special processes, mechanical testing and supporting R&T activity. Key Responsibilities: * Lead forensic investigation of landing gear parts. * Involvement in laboratory tasks relating to raw material suppliers, forgers and foundries. * Support special process departments, including surface treatments and non-destructive testing. * Undertake a variety of mechanical tests to support supplier developments, R&T and to resolve production issues. * Contribute to department and company improvements. * Undertake reviews of procedures and participate in the development of materials and process specifications. * Support the team with HSE initiatives. * Deliver internal materials and processes training. What you'll bring: * Degree in metallurgy or materials engineering/ science, although candidates from other science and engineering disciplines will be considered, depending on prior work experience. * Understand degradation and failure mechanisms applicable to engineering materials. * Exposure to fracture surface analysis, including both optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. * Previous experience of working in a materials laboratory environment, preferably within the aerospace sector. * Hands-on experience of metallographic preparation, microscopy and materials testing. * Knowledge of metallurgy, particularly with respect to steels, titanium and aluminium alloys and their associated non-destructive testing techniques. * Broad understanding of the fabrication process used to manufacture landing gear components. * Knowledge of surface treatments and protection systems used on landing gear structures. * Ability to understand and interpret specifications relating to materials and processes. * Ability to write accurate and detailed technical reports and other types of technical documentation. * Ability to effectively communicate and convey technical information to both internal and external customers.
