Development Technologist - Bread
This is an exciting opportunity to join Frank Roberts & Sons to support our growth plans. You will support the bread Research & Development (R&D) team by being creative and detail-oriented. Responsibilities include developing and reformulating products from concept to launch, ensuring they meet consumer expectations, internal QMS, and are commercially viable. The role requires strong technical knowledge of ingredients, food processes, sensory evaluation, and cross-functional collaboration with marketing, procurement, quality, and production teams.
Key Responsibilities:
* Maintain NPD documentation for both brand and non-brand, leading some projects and supporting others.
* Support the team by staying aware of market trends and consumer insights, and understanding influences beyond the bakery category.
* Carry out concept development for EPD and NPD projects, supporting long-term innovation pipelines.
* Build strong customer relationships to ensure proactive NPD/EPD programs aligned with channel and customer strategies, including customer visits.
* Work with the costing team to ensure new products meet financial targets.
* Collaborate with strategic suppliers to support NPD projects and serve as a knowledge resource.
* Support NPD projects at the Ilkeston site, working closely with the local team, which may involve travel.
* Follow product development procedures, ensuring compliance with BRC and customer policies, including allergen and HACCP considerations.
* Provide troubleshooting support to operations, including harvest transition and cost engineering projects.
Qualifications and Experience:
* Degree in food science or equivalent technical discipline.
* Over 2 years of development technologist experience.
* Technical expertise in food processes, especially bread and biscuits, with confidence working on plant and equipment.
* Knowledge of product development cycle, QMS procedures, and retailer NPD systems.
* Understanding of food labelling, product specifications, nutritional info, raw material specs, and packaging.
* Project management skills across multidisciplinary teams, including risk analysis and meeting deadlines.
* Awareness of food science developments, legislation, and sensory science.
* Collaborative, detail-oriented, and able to see projects through to completion.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills, flexible and adaptable.
* Leadership qualities with the ability to influence peers and managers.
