Grade 8 Full time starting salary is normally in the range £47,389 to £56,535 with potential progression once in post to £63,606
Grade 9 Full time starting salary is normally in the range £58,225 to £67,468 with potential progression once in post to £87,974

The School of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham, UK, seeks to recruit talented computer scientists from diverse backgrounds for the role of Assistant or Associate Professor.Successful candidates will join a vibrant School, regarded as one of the best in the UK in academic research, societal impact and education. This round welcomes applications from enthusiastic academics from any area within computer science, to strengthen, collaborate with and expand the main research themes in the School. Successful candidates will join in pursuing collaborative, challenge-led, research based on interdisciplinary research funding and in further improving diversity and inclusion in computer science research and education. New staff will also benefit from a programme of dedicated support for career development through Birmingham’s Academic Development Programme.
The School of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham is recruiting new academic staff to fulfil its ambitions as a leading UK university for computer science. We seek to recruit across the broad spectrum of computer science to strengthen and expand our six main research areas. These research areas include Cyber Security, Artificial Intelligence, Cyber-Physical Systems, Theory of Computation, Human-Computer Interaction and Socio-Technical Systems (more about research themes below).
Computer Science at the University of Birmingham is one of the leading departments in the UK for research and teaching in computer science, and with about eighty academics it is also one of the larger one. Our research is ranked 3rd across all UK universities according to the latest UK-wide Research Excellence Framework. Education is ranked 5th in the UK for computer science, according to 2025 tables (Complete University Guide). While pursuing excellence in research and education, we also aim to optimize our positive impact on society—examples include collaborations with industry partners and charities, commercialisation activities and an extensive wider participation programme. To support its aims, the School offers a vibrant, open and intellectually stimulating work environment in its dedicated computer science building, educating well over 2000 students.

The Birmingham Centre for Cyber Security and Privacy is recognised by EPSRC/NCSC as a UK Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research, conducting outstanding research in cyber security and privacy. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to applied cryptography, hardware-based security, embedded systems security (including automotive security), side-channel and fault-based attacks and security protocol analysis.
The Institute for Data and AI promotes excellence in Data Engineering, Data Science and AI theory and practice. It brings together researchers and educators from across the University around a shared ambition to address some of the grand challenges faced by our society. Research Themes include Digital Governance, Health, Manufacturing and Creative Industries.
Role Summary
The role holder will be based in Edgbaston. The key duties and responsibilities will include but not be limited to: giving lectures and seminars and supervising undergraduate / post-graduate students, course development and innovation, taking an active part in examinations, carrying out innovative research and writing papers on topics relevant to the specialist subject area (this will include journals, books and other material), and obtaining research grant funding.
The successful applicant will have a PhD in a relevant specialist subject area, as well as postdoctoral experience. We are looking for candidates who will actively contribute to our portfolio and community, through pursuit of research that will bring new opportunities, synergies, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The successful candidate will also have a track record in teaching at a higher education institution.

This advert will close on 30th September 2025. We follow a two-stage appointment process: mid/late October, longlisted candidates will be invited to give an online, 20-minute, research presentation, based on which shortlisting takes place. Shortlisted candidates will then be invited to visit the University of Birmingham, meet with staff members and students (if possible), and conduct a panel interview.
