Job Title: Tax Manager (Corporation Tax)

Location: Worthing

Contract Type: Permanent

Hours: 37/ week

Salary: £70,000 - £75,000 DOE

Job Overview

In this highly autonomous role, you will take overall ownership of taxation matters for Southern Water companies, primarily direct tax (corporation tax) but also indirect taxes. You will provide taxation advice to enable the company to effectively manage tax risks and liabilities.

You will work to mitigate the risk of incorrectly paid tax, such as interest and penalties, as well as the reputational risk for non-compliance.

You will improve Southern Water’s internal controls through tracking income, property and other taxes.

This is an autonomous role and you will have defined authority and responsibility for a significant area of work, including technical, financial and quality aspects.

You will manage your own workload, have freedom to prioritise and be accountable for actions and decisions taken by self.

You will determine whether responses to risks or recommendations require escalation.

Job Responsibilities:

1. UK Corporation Tax compliance process; including the preparation and filing of annual returns for all the groups entities

2. Year end and interim accounting tax review

3. Leading on the implementation of a new Corporation Tax platform

4. Preparation/ submission and analysis of monthly VAT returns and Construction Industry Tax returns

5. Responding to ad hoc tax queries from around the business

6. Researching and developing tax saving strategies and reconciling tax data on financial statements

7. Preparing internal memoranda or policy notes, written correspondence/ guidance/ other documents for submission to HMRC and advise to the business on taxation matters

8. Ad hoc tax projects as needed

About You

Essential:

9. Significant experience as a qualified tax accountant and experience at a senior level in accounting

10. A knowledge of computerised accounting and auditing record keeping systems and all relevant technical accounting standards

11. Full understanding of relevant tax legislation, including awareness of/ interest in broader tax issues beyond Corporate Tax e.g. Employment Taxes

12. Pro-active individual with interest and an ability to maintain current knowledge of taxation developments related to business matters of interest to Southern Water

13. Significant knowledge and experience of managing risk and ensuring governance and compliance, both internal standards and external regulatory requirements

14. Excellent analytical and accounting skills

15. Ability to work unsupervised with a proven ability to deliver against tight targets and timescales

16. Ability to gather, analyse and evaluate facts with an attention to detail and concern for order and quality

17. Ability to effectively establish and manage relationships with key stakeholders, with the drive to engage directly

18. Self starter with ability to work as part of a team and to work pro-actively across and with a number of other functions

19. CTA-Chartered Tax Advisor or qualified by experience

Desirable:

20. Experience of using Corporation Tax compliance software such as Alphatax would be desirable

21. Full knowledge of statutory and environmental regulations and legislation within which Southern Water operates

Package

This role will be full time Monday to Friday with a hybrid approach to working between our Durrington (Worthing) office and home (the current 'team anchor day' is Monday, plus one other day which can be in any other SW office), flexible working hours will also be considered.
