Trainee Basic Grade Clinical Perfusionist

A sought after opportunity has arisen to appoint a Trainee Clinical Perfusionist to join our team at Leeds General Infirmary. Due to continuous workforce planning we are looking to recruit a motivated individual with an enthusiasm for delivering care, within a dynamic clinical setting. The successful candidate will need to undertake the Bristol University MSc, alongside clinical training, lasting a minimum of 24 months. We are pivotal in supporting the delivery of a diverse range of cardiac surgery and techniques, from neonatal to adult patients, including ECMO. You will be assigned a mentor to teach and guide you through the clinical elements, as well as supporting you with completion of the course.

Main duties of the job

The post is a fixed term training contract, designed in obtaining National accreditation, with the expectation of a permanent position with the addition of 24/7 on-call contribution, once all criteria are achieved. You must register with the Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland and with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland to meet with the training course criteria. This advert is likely to close early, due to high applicant rate.

For further information, please contact Andrew Nichols or Lorna Davidson 01133925342.

Job responsibilities

What you will bring to the role

Clinical Perfusion is a highly specialised allied health profession, with a key focus on patient care and safety. The main role is the set-up and management of the heart-lung bypass machine, taking control of the patients cardiovascular circulation during cardiac surgery. This task requires extreme attention to detail, the ability to think quickly in stressful situations and communicate confidently within a multi-disciplinary team. Trainees will learn the role within adult cardiac surgery, but will progress into paediatric surgery towards the end of the training period. A variety of blood preservation techniques are utilised in all our operations. You will also be required to help maintain highly specialised equipment. During the training period, you will complete a portfolio of skills and knowledge. This will support your learning on the Perfusion MSc and your practical log book of a minimum of 150 bypass operations. On completion of these, you will be eligible to sit the final practical exam to obtain professional accreditation as a Clinical Perfusionist.

Criteria

* Upper 2nd class honours in a relevant science degree
