Offer description

Provide phlebotomy in accordance with current guidelines and local protocols.

Be able to record ECGs.

Blood pressure monitoring.

Wound management and suture or stitch removal.

Urinalysis.

Have an understanding of QOF and IIF and how Primary Care General Practice runs.

Refer patients to other clinicians as necessary.

Provide routine clinical care to patients according to locally approved protocols, under supervision of the Treatment Room Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, or GP.

Have primary care experience and experience working in a GP Practice.

Work within Redcar, East Cleveland, and Middlesbrough sites.


Main duties of the job

Understand the principles of healthy living and provide relevant health promotion literature to patients.

Collect patient data such as blood pressure, height, weight, and ECG in accordance with practice protocols and your competence to operate the necessary equipment.

Record data on patient electronic records in an accurate and timely manner.

Wound care, packings, and dressings.

Suture and stitch removal.

Summarise patient notes and provide administrative assistance to the nursing team.

Provide smoking cessation support to patients in accordance with your training and practice protocols.

Run blood pressure and ECG clinics.

Prepare the consulting and treatment rooms for effective consultation and ensure trolleys are fully stocked, maintaining stocks of examination instruments, stores, and specimen collection materials, and ensuring couches and workbenches or drawers are kept clean.

Maintain the system for monitoring and ordering clinical supplies.

Ensure that all specimens taken by clinicians or brought in by patients are ready for collection by the pathology service.

Assist in maintaining the safe storage of drugs and vaccines under the direction of the on-duty Nurse Practitioner/Practice Nurse/GP.

Perform weekly and monthly checks of the emergency trolley, including dusting and ensuring readiness.

Perform daily checks of the defibrillator and oxygen when the service is open.


About us

South Tees area comprises 46 general practices with a long history of collaboration in Langbaurgh, Eston, and Middlesbrough. It covers a population of 290,000 and includes some of the most deprived areas in the country. The area has traditionally experienced high levels of emergency and unplanned hospital admissions.

The ELM Extended Hours Service is a major development towards integrated primary care, extending access outside current core hours and led by General Practices.

The Healthcare Assistant will work closely with other key members of the ELM Service, ELM Alliance Management Team, and external organizations to implement and deliver the service on time and within budget.


Job responsibilities

The Healthcare Assistant will:

Be a member of the clinical team.

Provide phlebotomy according to current guidelines and local protocols.

Be able to record ECGs.

Monitor blood pressure.

Manage wounds and remove sutures or stitches.

Perform urinalysis.

Understand QOF and IIF, and how Primary Care General Practice operates.

Refer patients to other clinicians as necessary.

Provide routine clinical care under supervision.

Have experience working in a GP Practice within primary care.

Specific Responsibilities

Understand healthy living principles and provide health promotion literature. Assist in emergency management of patients.

Collect patient data and record it accurately.

Manage wound care, sutures, and dressings.

Summarize patient notes and assist with administrative tasks.

Support smoking cessation efforts.

Run clinics for blood pressure and ECG.

Prepare and maintain treatment rooms and supplies.

Ensure specimens are ready for collection.

Help maintain safe storage of medications and vaccines.

Perform safety checks on emergency equipment regularly.

Ensure compliance with infection control and patient dignity standards.


Additional responsibilities include:

Adhering to supervision requirements, managing risks, maintaining confidentiality, ensuring health and safety, and supporting safeguarding policies.
