Overview
We are seeking to appoint a substantive Consultant Vascular Surgeon to join our expanding team. The successful candidate will demonstrate competence across a comprehensive range of traditional open and endovascular procedures, with proficiency in endovascular techniques, particularly deep venous interventions. The role is part of an established vascular network comprising Bedford, Luton, and Milton Keynes hospitals, operating a hub‑and‑spoke model with Luton and Dunstable Hospital as the central hub for all planned and emergency arterial activity.
Responsibilities
* Perform the full spectrum of traditional open vascular procedures, including aortic and peripheral arterial surgery, across elective and emergency settings.
* Apply endovascular techniques, especially deep venous interventions, to complement open surgical practice.
* Work in accordance with established practices and care pathways, collaborating effectively with colleagues to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
* Retain responsibility for patient care even when not on call, providing comprehensive written handovers where appropriate.
* Attend the weekly Vascular Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meeting, the Vascular Grand Round, and departmental quality improvement forums.
* Participate in the vascular emergency on‑call rota at the hub site (currently 1:8) and support the Trust’s 7‑day vascular service.
* Contribute to departmental audit activities and quality improvement initiatives.
* Provide teaching, training, and supervision of junior medical and nursing staff, and support the education of undergraduate students, nurses and allied health professionals.
* Engage in Continuing Medical Education (CME), mentoring, and coaching opportunities to maintain and develop the necessary skills.
* Complete the Trust’s annual appraisal programme as part of the GMC revalidation process.
* Take on additional roles and responsibilities as required by the department and Trust governance framework.
Qualifications & Expectations
* Competence across traditional open and endovascular vascular procedures, with a particular emphasis on deep venous interventions.
* Experience working within a vascular network that employs a hub‑and‑spoke model.

* GMC medical licence with active revalidation.
