We are pleased to offer this fabulous opportunity for a Band 7 nurse leader to join our nursing team on Ward 23 Royal Preston Hospital.
In this role you will be expected to demonstrate strong clinical and compassionate leadership skills within elderly medicine. You will work in partnership with the existing ward manager to ensure the ward is operationally safe, effective and well led. You must be able to demonstrate that you have excellent communication skills, sound clinical knowledge base and a passion to look after our elderly patients at their most frail. You will work alongside colleagues who are devoted to continually improve the quality of care and enhance our patient’s experience during their hospital stay.
You will be a clinical role model and have a willingness to develop the team as well as your own professional growth. You will be fully supported by the senior nursing and management team within the division.
Main duties of the job
As a ward manager you will be responsible for the highest standards in safety, quality and clinical governance, whilst delivering outstanding patient care and service needs.
The Senior Sister/Charge Nurse has overall responsibility for the provision of excellent care with compassion for the patients, relative and visitors who are cared for within their ward or department or by their team.
To ensure the provision of excellent care with compassion the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse is responsible for:
1. Ensuring that the nursing team and care support team within their ward or department are adequately resourced and organised.
2. Ensuring the nursing team and care support team are adequately supported and developed to deliver excellent care with compassion in line with the Trust’s Values & Nursing & Midwifery Professional Framework.
Working for our organisation
We are a big unit – we have 34 beds and we are not a modern ward by any stretch of the imagination, but our team grow to love our more traditional ward layout and it does add a bit of character to our workplace.
However, this does not prevent us from being modern in terms of how we want to build the team, evolve the care we give, develop the people who work on the ward and work hand in hand with our medical and educational colleagues to ensure everyone is developed to be the best version of themselves.

Is responsible for the provision of Excellent Care with Compassion
Is responsible for ensuring that the nursing team and care support team are adequately resourced and organised in order to deliver excellent care with compassion
Is responsible for ensure the nursing team and care support team are adequately supported and developed to deliver excellent care with compassion
Is responsible for leading and developing the nursing team and the dept administration and support teams by being a visible and strong role model providing leadership and direction to the team, capitalising on research and development opportunities, providing clinical supervision and advice for staff and students in order to support them in reaching their full potential
Is responsible for ensuring the productive operation of the department through the monitoring and maintenance of standards that create a safe, clean and organised environment and by using processes designed to increase the time nurses spend in therapeutic contact with patients
Safeguards people and promotes equality in care and practice by recognising, respecting and meeting the needs and choices of individuals
Overall responsibility for vacancy / talent management, ensuring all vacancies are recruited to in a timely manner and in line with the our recruitment and selection policy
Responsible for workforce planning
Where there are difficult to fill roles solutions are found to ensure the department has sustainable staffing structures at substantive spend, which may be achieved through different marketing solutions or different structural arrangements

Qualifications & Education
Essential criteria
3. Appropriate NMC Registration
4. Mentorship qualification
5. Post Registration Qualifications relevant to the role
6. Diploma or Degree in Nursing
7. Evidence of Education to Degree Level
8. Successful completion of/will to work towards a leadership and development programme (equivalent to the Internal Band 6 Leadership and Development programme).
Desirable criteria
9. Level 4 ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management) or equivalent
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
10. Knowledge of Clinical Governance and Safeguarding and the relevance of these to practice
11. Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
12. Knowledge of ethical issues
13. Evidence of clinical competence in area of speciality eg surgery
14. Experience of mentorship and ability to identify learning and development needs
Desirable criteria
15. Experience of managing a clinical area
16. Knowledge of the PDPR Process
17. Evidence of working at Band 7
