Senior Occupational Therapist

The post holder will work as a senior Occupational Therapist within the Yorkshire and Humber Mother & Baby Unit, providing specialist assessment and tailored interventions to mothers with moderate to severe perinatal mental health needs. They will promote functional and psychological independence through individual and group therapies, while offering expert clinical advice to colleagues and external partners. The role includes contributing to care planning, delivering high quality interventions, and supporting staff through supervision, appraisal, and role modelling best practice. Working closely with the Clinical Team Manager, the post holder will help coordinate daily service delivery, develop the Occupational Therapy pathway, and support ongoing service improvement and professional development within the Trust.


Main duties of the job

The role includes offering expert advice to colleagues and external agencies and contributing to high-quality care planning and delivery throughout admission. The post holder will provide clinical supervision, staff appraisals, and team coordination, while modelling best practice in Occupational Therapy assessments, interventions, risk management, and recovery-focused care. Operating Monday to Friday on a 7.5-hour rotational shift pattern, the role involves close collaboration with the Clinical Team Manager to ensure effective treatment delivery and continuous service improvement. The post holder will actively participate in day-to-day service provision, working within a structured Occupational Therapy pathway and contributing to the development of a robust OT service. They will also be responsible for care planning under the Care Programme Approach (CPA), supporting colleagues in implementing treatment plans, and maintaining strong professional links within the Trust to uphold standards and support the ongoing evolution of the profession.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Relevant core professional qualification that is essential for the post - BSc/Dip/MSc OT.


Skills

* Evidence of post qualification development or training.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
* Can demonstrate assessment and problem solving skills.


Experience

* Demonstrates a high level of clinical skill, knowledge and experience.
* Minimum of 18 months experience as a qualified occupational therapist.
* Experience of working with mental health.
* Experience of supervising other staff.
* Experience of risk management.


Knowledge

* Demonstrates a commitment to service improvement with use of evidence based practice.
* Clear understanding of the Occupational Therapy role within perinatal mental health.
* Actively seeks opportunities for personal and professional development.
