Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a TB Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our nurse-led TB team at the University Hospitals Dorset based at Poole hospital on the South coast. Working alongside the TB ECP, ACP and Nurse Consultant, you will help to provide comprehensive TB services across East Dorset. Previous TB experience is advantageous but not essential. Post holders will be expected to develop their TB clinical skills, experience and knowledge. Persons already possessing ECP / ACP qualifications and skills are also welcome to apply but the post is capped at a band 6. Candidates must be able to demonstrate a desire to work with and develop their TB clinical skills and knowledge as well as an ability to practice both autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team within both primary and secondary care settings. The successful applicants will operate nurse-led clinics, providing LTBI diagnosis and treatment, assistance in the diagnosis, treatment and follow up of people with latent and active TB and NTM diseases, supervision of treatment, TB contact tracing, new entrant TB screening and BCG vaccination. Care is delivered under the supervision of the ACP and TB Nurse Consultant.
Responsibilities
* Operate nurse-led clinics providing LTBI diagnosis and treatment, assistance in the diagnosis, treatment and follow up of people with latent and active TB and NTM diseases, supervision of treatment, TB contact tracing, new entrant TB screening and BCG vaccination.
* Work under supervision with the ACP and TB Nurse Consultant; develop TB clinical skills and knowledge and work within a multidisciplinary team in primary and secondary care settings.
* Develop and maintain high standards of clinical knowledge and skills to holistically assess and manage patient care, often in complex clinical and/or social circumstances.
* Progressively acquire the expertise to become an accountable practitioner, responsible for managing their own caseload with professional autonomy, judgment, and accountability in complex clinical decisions within the TB Service.
* Support and contribute to the development and implementation of service and policy improvements, and engage in evidence-based practice aligned with Trust values.
* Act as a knowledge resource on TB for colleagues, patients and the wider community; contribute to TB-related education for healthcare professionals, patients and the public.
Qualifications and Skills
* TB experience is advantageous but not essential; post holders should be prepared to develop TB clinical skills and knowledge.
* Applicants with ECP/ACP qualifications and skills are welcome; post is capped at band 6.
* Ability to work autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team across primary and secondary care settings.
* Car owner/driver essential for the role and may require driving across the county as needed.
* Ability to communicate complex, sensitive information clearly and empathetically, and to engage with individuals, families and carers across care options.
* Demonstrated readiness to engage in self-directed learning and professional development; ability to plan and manage a discrete aspect of patient care and to deliver relevant specialist teaching.
Professional Development and Practice
* With appropriate supervision, undertake assessment, diagnosis and management of patients with TB, including latent and active disease, and other mycobacterial infections.
* Develop competence to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and, where appropriate, autonomously; progress toward accountable practice with high standards of care.
* Contribute to service and policy improvements and to local quality and safety initiatives; participate in peer review and governance processes.
