ABOUT THE ROLE: Keeping people safe from Northern Ireland Related Terrorism (NIRT) is a top strategic priority for the UK Government. Within the Northern Ireland Office (NIO), this mission is led by the Security & Protection Group (SPG), which delivers through three core teams: Policy, Strategy, Operational Delivery; and Casework and Protection. In this pivotal role, you will contribute to some of the UK Governments highest priorities: national security and public protection. Youll work across a wide range of operational delivery, casework, and high-level briefings, all within a dynamic and fast-paced environment. Youll gain unique insight into the NIOs role in firearms appeals and licensing, and help shape effective decisions. Strong analytical skills will be essential, as well as the ability to communicate complex information clearly and concisely. You may also work on the NIOs Home Protection Scheme. What Youll Be Doing: Building strong working relationships across security partners, stakeholders, and the wider Government. Managing sensitive information with discretion and sound judgement. Contributing to briefing Ministers and ensuring theyre equipped with the right information at the right time. Identifying and mitigating risklegal, security-related, and reputational. Adapting quickly to new subjects and delivering under pressure with professionalism and integrity. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The main responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to: Delivery of NIOs statutory responsibilities for firearms appeals, and explosive precursor and prohibited weapons licencing Project work to improve processes linked to own casework and wider team and group objectives Developing and maintaining excellent working relationships and conducting regular engagement with security partners in Northern Ireland, the Devolved Administration, and Whitehall in order to deliver casework Drafting submissions for senior officials and ministers, paying close attention to detail and accuracy Own and deliver a portfolio of casework activity Potential line management of staff at EO level Possible involvement in NIO Duty Officer Cadre ESSENTIAL CRITERIA: The post holder will need to demonstrate the following in their application and at interview: Excellent written and oral communications skills. Ability to self-organise, prioritise and pay close attention to detail. The ability to develop and maintain effective responsive relationships with colleagues and stakeholders, and to use your interpersonal skills to achieve results. A willingness to undergo Security Check (SC) clearance (the appropriate level of security clearance must be achieved before commencing the full duties of the post). DESIRABLE CRITERIA: A good understanding of the political and security environment in Northern Ireland Experience working on operational delivery/complex casework Experience of briefing senior leaders on complex issues.
