Job overview

The post holder will be responsible for strategically leading and managing the multi-disciplinary education agenda for Maternity Services. This will be inclusive of statutory and mandatory training, staff development plan, skills log, student and apprenticeship programme management, MSW programme and International Midwives.

They will be responsible for supporting and developing the maternity education department and will lead, promote, and facilitate a safe and positive learning environment and culture for all maternity staff groups. They will identify any gaps in the provision of education and training and be instrumental in the development and implementation of new education programmes, local ensuring local and national service objectives are included within the local maternity education strategy.

Main duties of the job

Accountability:

·Be responsible for the management of the coordination of the professional development of all midwives within the Maternity Department.

·Manage the facilitation of the team to support learning to the highest quality through teaching and assessing, whilst supporting the Trust’s Clinical Governance agenda.

·To ensure all maternity staff are working in accordance with their trust requirements and the orientation period for new staff is concise, evidence based and supported by the post holder.

·Play a pivotal role in education provision within the Maternity Department and be a proficient, approachable role model in addition to an expert clinician in the field of midwifery, with a proven track record of clinical achievement.

·Ensure learning identified in the PQSM (Perinatal Quality Surveillance Model) is incorporated into the training agenda and particular emphasis on reducing inequalities relating to ethnicity, deprivation, disability, sexual orientation, and gender.

·Accountability for ensuring accurate training reports and compliance especially in respect to MIS requirements

·Ensure students and practice supervisors and assessors are supported to provide a positive learning environment across the unit inclusive of community areas

All successful applicants will be required to complete our corporate trust induction once a start date had been agreed.

Following your corporate induction you will be expected to attend the Trust’s 2-week Induction Programme for RNs, NAs, RMs, ODPs and Paramedics. The programme is full-time (please email if this is problematic) and will involve travel to both Trust sites. The programme includes supernumerary shifts in the clinical area, classroom-based sessions and e-learning.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

5. NMC Registered Midwife
6. Master’s Degree or evidence of equivalent experience
7. Practice supervisor / assessor
8. Evidence of further study and development of professional and academic skills
9. NIPE trained

Desirable criteria

10. PMA
11. Leadership/ management qualification
12. Governance experience
13. GIC
14. Teaching or assessing qualification

Experience/Knowledge

Essential criteria

15. All round Midwifery clinical experience / can demonstrate credible midwifery knowledge
16. Excellent presentation skills
17. Ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external partners.
18. Extensive knowledge of midwifery education
19. Sound knowledge of recent midwifery reports with awareness of implications to service provision
20. Experience in teaching, mentoring, assessment and clinical supervision
21. Experience of acting as a practice supervisor / assessor to support both qualified midwives and students
22. Experience of quality assurance monitoring processes or willingness to learn this
23. Understanding of pre and post registration educational requirements
