We are particularly keen to hear from protected groups – including BAME, LGBT+ and people with a disability.

Job overview

Are you a passionate and dedicated neonatal nurse? Are you looking for a challenging career move where you can make a difference? Then you might want to consider joining our exceptional team! A rare opportunity has arisen and we are looking to recruit Band 6 Neonatal Nurses with 'QIS'.

Neonatal Services at UHMBT are provided from both Furness General Hospital and Royal Lancaster Infirmary sites and are part of the North West Neonatal Operational Delivery Network.

The Special Care Baby Unit at Furness General Hospital is integrated into the South Lakes Birth Centre and has a cot capacity of 4. We provide care to babies and their families from 32 weeks gestation but also provide stabilisation for critically ill babies/babies born below 32 weeks in preparation for transfer by the regional transport team.

We moved into our brand new unit in 2018- please access the video link below for a virtual tour!

The Neonatal Unit at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI) is a level 2 unit with 1 intensive care cot, 2 High Dependency cots and 7 Special Care cots. Both sites have a well developed transitional care service which enables babies and their mothers to stay together when requiring additional support.

The base site for this post is Furness General Hospital, however there may be a requirement to work on the LNU at Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

Main duties of the job

The post holder:

  • Should have excellent clinical knowledge and skills and a commitment to delivering high quality, family-centred care
  • Will be reliable and flexible
  • Will have excellent communication skills
  • Should be confident in their approach, show initiative, have excellent leadership skills and be organised
  • Has the ability to motivate themselves and others and be personally and professionally mature
  • Will contribute and commit to promoting a positive team based attitude
  • Will be committed to on-going learning and development and be willing and open to embracing positive change and transformation

The post requires experience, knowledge and skills of working in a neonatal unit at senior level. The successful candidate will lead/coordinate shifts, be able to work well independently and within the team and support junior staff as well as pre-registration student nurses.

There are opportunities for you to undertake a quality role in an area of interest and participate in network specialist interest groups, which will both enhance your own professional development and improve care for babies and families.

We promote UNICEF baby friendly standards and family integrated care and are working towards stage 2 BFI accreditation.

Staff work closely alongside the Maternity and Paediatric teams.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Our community services for adults are provided in people’s homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.
