Overview
We are seeking a Junior Clinical Fellow to join the Trauma and Orthopaedics Directorate from August 2026. This is a full‑time post with on‑call commitments, offered initially on a fixed‑term basis for 12 months.
Clinical activity will be delivered across both Royal Blackburn Hospital and Burnley General Hospital; however, the post will be based predominantly at Royal Blackburn Hospital.
The role is primarily ward‑based, with regular weekly opportunities to attend outpatient clinics and theatre sessions to support clinical development and training.
Duties & Responsibilities
Duties will include the management of both elective and trauma admissions. Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital functions as the main acute site, while Burnley General Teaching Hospital operates as the elective site where the majority of planned orthopaedic surgery is undertaken.
The post holder will share responsibility for the day‑to‑day management of pre‑ and post‑operative trauma and elective patients, with appropriate supervision and support from senior colleagues within the Trauma and Orthopaedics team.
On‑call duties are undertaken on a full‑shift rota alongside FY2 doctors, Junior Clinical Fellows, and Core Trainees (CT1/CT2).
Departmental Support and Exposure
All orthopaedic subspecialties are represented within the department, with the exception of spinal surgery, providing exposure to a broad and varied case mix. The department is well supported by a dedicated Orthogeriatric team and Trauma Coordinators, ensuring high‑quality, multidisciplinary patient care.
The department benefits from a strong and experienced medical workforce, comprising:
* 21 Consultants
* 4 Specialty Doctors
* 7 ST3+ Trainees
* 5 Senior Clinical Fellows
* 2 Core Surgical Trainees
* 5 Junior Clinical Fellows
* 5 FY2 Trainees
* 4 FY1 Trainees
* 6 Advanced Clinical Practitioners
Training & Development
This post is classed as a non‑training grade; however, the department is fully committed to providing an equivalent level of training and development for the successful candidate. The post holder will be assigned a named Clinical Supervisor and will receive regular appraisal and feedback to support professional development.
There are excellent opportunities to become involved in departmental audit and research projects, and applicants will be encouraged to participate in quality improvement and educational activity.
