About the role
In this work we will study new modes of operation of memristors, and explore how we can tailor materials properties to enhance the electronic functionality of memristive devices. The work will involve materials synthesis and deposition, device fabrication and physical and electrical characterisation in collaboration with partners in our Innovation and Knowledge Centre in Neuromorphic Computing Hardware.
This position will help to deliver the goals of the project by helping to develop the novel materials and devices underpinning future brain-inspired, neuromorphic, computing systems. This will be carried out within the Neuroware Innovation and Knowledge Centre in Neuromorphic Computing Hardware, which is led by UCL with eight partner institutions: the universities of Cambridge, Oxford, Manchester, Sheffield, and Strathclyde, Imperial College London, King’s College London, and the National Physical Laboratory. The post holder will be able to be involved in all aspects of the project, with a particular focus on development of novel memristive devices.
The post is available for 48 months in the first instance. Further funding to support the post may be available. The salary range available is UCL Grade - 33, £45, - 47, per annum (inclusive of London Allowance).
About you
Candidates should have a PhD (or about to submit) in Electronic Engineering, Materials Science, Nanotechnology, Physics or a closely related field ( Semiconductor Physics). They should have a track record of research in memristive materials and devices or a closely related field, and an in-depth understanding of the principles of electronic device fabrication and testing. Practical experience of device fabrication (, in a cleanroom) and electronic and physical characterisation of devices is essential.
Practical experience of creating a model (, a compact circuit model or a physics-based model) of memristive devices or similar is desirable.
If the successful candidate has not yet been awarded their PhD, appointment will be made as a Research Assistant (Grade 6B). Payment at Grade 7 will be backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis including corrections, once the PhD has been awarded. Research Assistant (Grade 6B): point 25-28. Salary range £39, to £41, (inc. London Allowance of £5, pa).
