Job Purpose
An exciting opportunity for an experienced EHC Practitioner to support children and young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN) through the management of statutory assessments and the development of Education, Health, and Care (EHC) Plans. The role involves close collaboration with families, schools, and multi-agency professionals to ensure tailored, legally compliant, and timely support. The postholder will also oversee vulnerable groups, including children and young people who are excluded, on part-time timetables, or accessing education through EOTAS/EOTAC or EHE.
Key Responsibilities
EHC Plan Development
* Construct and develop Education, Health, and Care Plans based on approved assessments.
* Ensure suitable provision is in place, with clear monitoring and accountability.
* Align plans with service user aspirations and statutory requirements.
Amendments and Reviews
* Draft and amend plans to ensure accuracy and effectiveness.
* Coordinate annual and transitional reviews, monitoring progress and ensuring smooth transitions.
Statutory Decision-Making
* Apply legal tests for statutory assessment under Section 36 of the Children and Families Act 2014.
* Make Stage 1 & Stage 2 decisions on EHC Needs Assessments.
* Communicate decisions clearly and facilitate next-step planning where statutory assessment is not pursued.
Family and Service User Support
* Act as a key contact for parents, carers, and young people.
* Provide advice and guidance on EHC processes.
* Build strong relationships using a strength-based approach.
Multi-Agency Coordination
* Work collaboratively with education, health, and social care professionals.
* Liaise with service providers and legal services where required.
* Triangulate evidence from multiple sources to inform decision-making.
* Challenge incomplete submissions to drive quality and statutory compliance.
Compliance and Record-Keeping
* Maintain accurate, up-to-date records in line with statutory and organisational policies.
* Ensure decisions and case progress are clearly documented.
Funding and Resource Allocation
* Identify required services and request funding where appropriate.
* Contribute to funding panels and placement decisions.
* Ensure recommendations provide value for money and align with commissioned services.
Team Support and Development
* Support colleagues with day-to-day guidance.
* Contribute to service improvements and best practice implementation.
General Duties
* Demonstrate commitment to safeguarding and equal opportunities.
* Undertake additional duties as required in line with the role.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Education
* Relevant qualification in social care, education, or a related field – Essential.
* Knowledge of SEN legislation and statutory responsibilities – Essential.
Experience
* Previous experience managing EHC processes or SEN casework – Essential.
* Experience in multi-agency working with education, health, and social care professionals – Essential.
* Experience in statutory decision-making and funding/resource allocation – Desirable.
Skills & Abilities
* Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal – Essential.
* Strong organisational skills with ability to manage a caseload – Essential.
* Analytical skills to assess and triangulate evidence – Essential.
* Ability to manage challenging conversations with families and professionals – Essential.
Working Conditions & Arrangements
* Full-time, 37 hours per week (Monday–Friday).
* Hybrid working with office attendance as required.
* Temporary assignment.
Pre-Employment Requirements
* Two satisfactory references covering the last 3 years.
* Evidence of essential qualifications.
* Right to Work in the UK (valid Photo ID and National Insurance Number).
