About the Role We are recruiting a Geotechnical Designer to join a respected multidisciplinary engineering consultancy supporting major UK infrastructure and civil engineering projects. This is a technically focused design role, working at the interface between geotechnical analysis, engineering design and construction delivery. You will play a key part in producing robust, buildable geotechnical designs and high-quality technical outputs for a range of challenging ground engineering schemes.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop and produce geotechnical designs for foundations, retaining structures, slopes, embankments and temporary works.
* Undertake geotechnical analysis and calculations to support detailed design and construction.
* Prepare technical drawings, sketches and design deliverables in collaboration with engineering teams.
* Interpret ground investigation data to inform design solutions and reduce project risk.
* Work closely with civil, structural and temporary works engineers to integrate geotechnical design into multidisciplinary projects.
* Support the preparation of design reports, technical notes and calculations.
* Assist with constructability reviews and provide design input during construction stages.
* Ensure designs comply with relevant UK standards, codes and industry best practice.
Technical Skills and Software Experience
The ideal candidate will have experience using some of the following:
* Geotechnical analysis and design software, such as:
* PLAXIS (2D/3D)
* Slope/W (GeoStudio)
* WALLAP / FREW
* GGU (Retain, Stability, Settle)
* Oasys Suite (Slope, Adsec, Wallap or similar)
* Engineering and design tools, including:
* AutoCAD or Civil 3D for geotechnical detailing
* Excel for calculations and technical spreadsheets
* GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS or QGIS) for ground data interpretation (desirable)
* Strong understanding of:
* UK ground conditions and engineering geology
* Soil mechanics and geotechnical design principles
* Eurocodes and relevant British Standards (e.g., BS 8002, BS EN 1997)
* Ground investigation data interpretation and its application to design
Experience and Qualifications
* Degree (BSc or MSc) in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology or related discipline.
* Typically 3 to 6 years’ experience in a geotechnical design role within consultancy or contracting.
* Proven experience producing geotechnical calculations and design outputs.
* Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
* Strong technical writing and communication skills.
