Role Summary

Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (Northern) Operating Theatres has an exciting opportunity for Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) apprentices to join our innovative and supportive theatre team. The graduate ODP Apprenticeship programme is a fully funded route towards qualification as a HCPC registered ODP.

ODPs are registered healthcare professionals specialising in anaesthetics, surgery and the post anaesthetic care unit, providing high quality clinical care to all patient age groups.

The apprenticeship is a month programme of work based learning that is directly related to the apprenticeship standard. In addition, the apprenticeship has a mandatory % off-the-job learning which is provided as weekly day release. The University-based Honours degree study is also linked to the Apprenticeship Standard. Successful applicants will start as a theatre support worker (TSW) from June 6 prior to the actual apprentice start date in September 5.

Eligibility

You will need to have an understanding of the scope of the role of the ODP in context of the team and the organisation, and how the role may contribute to service development. You will treat people with dignity, respecting individual's diversity, beliefs, culture, needs, values, privacy and preferences. You will show respect and empathy for those you work with, have the courage to challenge areas of concern and work to evidence based best practice. You will also be adaptable, reflective, reliable and consistent, show discretion, resilience, self-awareness, demonstrate leadership, communicate effectively and work well in a team.

You must be able to meet the following criteria:

Completion of the care certificate, which can be done in the period you will be a TSW from June if you haven’t already achieved it.

UCAS points which includes GCSE Maths, English and one other at grade 4 or higher. A level BBC or equivalent. See BCU website for more information and equivalent qualifications. Applicants currently undertaking qualifications will be considered if they are completed before the course start date in September and they may be offered a conditional offer.

The academic part of the training will be provided by Birmingham City University (South West) based in Exeter.

On successful completion of the programme you will be equipped with the appropriate knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours to ensure competence at the point of qualification. You will have the capability to continue to meet Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) regulatory standards throughout your professional career.

To be eligible for Government funded Apprenticeships, you should also have lived within the UK or EU for at least the last 3 years.

If you are successful at shortlisting, you will be invited to attend a tour of the department and meet the management team.

Working hours per week over 4 days

Pay for Apprenticeship is set by Annex. New to the NHS or on band 2, pay starts at % of top Band 5 (currently % of top Band 5 (currently for year 2 and % of top Band 5 (currently for year 3. If you are currently employed in the NHS on band 3 pay your pay will remain at that level until Annex becomes equal or greater than your existing pay level.
