Overview
Junior Clinical Fellow (SHO) in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Royal Brompton Hospital. Fixed term - 6 months (possible extension up to 24 months). An opportunity to gain exposure in cardiothoracic surgery and develop experience for national specialty training. You will be assigned a named educational supervisor to construct an individual training plan with regular appraisal, and opportunities to participate in audit and research. The post is part of a dynamic team with international reputation in adult cardiac and thoracic surgery. Applicants must have MBBS or equivalent and be GMC-registered. The post is part of an 8-person rota which does not include night shifts. The post may close early if a sufficient number of applications are received.
Main duties of the job
* Acquaint yourself with details of patient management in discussion with the consultants and ensure their efficient execution.
* Maintain good communication with all medical colleagues (anaesthetists, cardiologists, nursing staff, and paramedical departments) for the benefit of the patient.
* Keep specialist registrars and consultants informed regarding any changes in patient condition.
* Keep in-patient notes up to date and tidy.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
* Take history, examine and record findings of all patients admitted under the consultant’s care.
* Carry out and arrange relevant investigations.
* See and examine all patients under the care of the consultant, including those in ICU.
* Assist in the operating theatre when required.
* Attend and assist in outpatient clinics as appropriate.
* Arrange transfer of patients to other hospitals or discharge home, including a discharge summary.
* During duty weekends and evenings, be responsible for the care of all cardiothoracic patients on the wards.
* Perform minor surgical procedures under supervision if necessary.
* Cross-cover with other ST1/Junior Clinical Fellows as required, under supervision.
* Inform the specialist registrar and consultant of any patient concerns.
* Communicate patient progress to relatives.
* Be available for emergency calls to ITU and other areas (e.g., cardiac arrest) if required.
* Participate in research projects and, if required, lecturing to staff (nurses, physiotherapists).
* Participate in the medical audit programme and update patient administration data.
* Be flexible and respond to service needs as they arise.

Qualifications and training
* Essential: Full GMC Registration and licence to practise

* Other relevant postgraduate qualifications or equivalent
Clinical experience
* Essential: Comprehensive clinical experience in relevant placements
* Desirable: Experience working in the NHS or similar healthcare system
Knowledge, skills and other
* Computer literacy; experience in undergraduate teaching and postgraduate training
* Understanding of Good Medical Practice (GMC) and contribution to clinical audit and risk management
* Ability to work as a multidisciplinary team with good organisational and communication skills
* Knowledge of patient safety, time management, and flexible, team-based care
* Understanding of the research process and willingness to work flexibly
