Job Details

Data Engineer – College/Directorate: CIO Group (DTS). Grade: G. Location: High Wycombe Campus (some remote). Responsible to: Head of Digital Transformation. Hours: 37 per week. Employment: Full Time (37 hours per week) – Fixed Term (12 months).

Salary: £38,784 – £43,482 per annum.


Job Purpose

The Data Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of the University’s data pipelines, integration frameworks, and structured data environments.

They ensure that data from core systems, including the Student Management System and related platforms, is reliably extracted, transformed, validated, and made available for reporting, analytics, and regulatory submission.

They work closely with Systems Development, Business Systems, Data Analysts and enterprise stakeholders to implement scalable and secure data architectures that support operational reporting, statutory returns and business intelligence.

The role strengthens data reliability, automation, and performance, reducing manual intervention and improving institutional confidence in data outputs.


Responsibilities

* Design, develop, and maintain data pipelines and integration processes between institutional systems.
* Implement ETL/ELT processes to support reporting and analytics requirements.
* Ensure data accuracy, performance, and reliability within structured data environments.
* Collaborate with stakeholders to translate reporting and integration requirements into technical data solutions.
* Support data validation, reconciliation, and audit processes.
* Maintain secure handling and governance of institutional data assets.
* Comply with relevant legislative and other requirements (e.g. Data Protection Act 2018 and GDPR, Health and Safety, UKVI, Equality and Diversity) in all working practices.
* Perform additional duties as reasonably required.

Essential Requirements

* Education, Qualifications & Training
o Degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or related discipline (or equivalent demonstrable experience).
o Evidence of continued professional development in data engineering, integration, or cloud data platforms.
* Knowledge & Experience
o Experience designing and implementing data pipelines and integration workflows.
o Experience working with relational databases and data modelling techniques.
o Experience with ETL/ELT tools or equivalent data transformation frameworks.
o Experience working with APIs and system integrations.
o Experience working within governance‑driven or compliance‑sensitive environments.
o Experience with cloud data platforms or modern data architectures (desirable).
o Experience in Higher Education data environments (desirable but advantageous).
