Job Opportunity: Consultant in Microbiology and Virology
This post offers an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated clinician to join a dynamic team delivering Microbiology and Virology services through active clinical liaison in NHS Grampian. The position is primarily based at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and is suitable for candidates interested in part-time work.
The successful candidate will join a team of 6 other Consultants in a site accredited for training.
This is a 9 PA post, including 1 PA for on-call work (36 hours per week), contributing to a 1 in 7 out-of-hours rota. It is a permanent position.
It is expected that the post holder will dedicate a minimum of 4 PAs to Virology.
Department Overview
The Department at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary provides comprehensive diagnostic Microbiological services, including Bacteriology, Virology, Parasitology, Mycology, Serology, and Molecular components. Annually, over 500,000 samples are processed. The department also hosts a National Services Division-funded extended susceptibility testing for multi-resistant Gram-negative isolates from cystic fibrosis patients across Scotland. The Virology Department offers extensive serology and molecular services, recently upgraded to support NHSG's response to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.
Location and Community
Located in North East Scotland, Aberdeen is an affluent, friendly, and vibrant city offering a mix of urban amenities and access to beautiful countryside and coastline. The department is part of a large Medical Microbiology team involved in a broad range of clinical and educational activities.
Qualifications and Registration
Applicants trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry onto the GMC Specialist Register. Alternatively, candidates may possess a CESR / CESR (CP).
Applicants not listed on the GMC Specialist Register but with appropriate training and experience may be considered for a Locum Consultant position (up to 12 months). During locum employment, candidates can apply for CESR / CESR (CP) and entry onto the Specialist Register.
