Senior Maintenance Engineer
Location: Caerphilly
Contract: Permanent
We are currently working with a client based in Caerphilly, who are looking for a skilled maintenance fitter that can provide preventative maintenance and help with mechanical breakdown service on machinery on-site.
This role operates on a day shift, working 37.5 hours a week.
Working hours are Monday to Friday.
You may need to support with breakdowns or emergency call outs when necessary.
As you will be the senior within the mechanical team, you will be expected to step in and cover the maintenance manager when absent.
Preventative maintenance will include:
* Transmission belt inspection, tensioning and changing,
* Inspection of bearings and couplings, alignment checking.
* Installation and maintenance of rotating equipment including pumps, refiners, paper machine rolls, agitators, fans.
* Removal and fitting of bearings and couplings.
* Repair and maintenance of all types of seals and packing’s.
* Turning, milling and grinding of components.
* General fabrication work.
* Rigging and lifting of heavy equipment.
* Fault finding on, and repair of Hydraulic and Pneumatic systems.
* Repair of compressors and other ancillary equipment.
Role Responsibilities – Senior Maintenance Engineer
* Lead, organise, and support the maintenance team to ensure smooth plant operations and minimal downtime.
* Manage maintenance and reliability programmes, ensuring work is completed safely, on time, and within budget.
* Continuously improve engineering standards, safety, environmental performance, and overall equipment reliability.
* Respond quickly and effectively to breakdowns, balancing safety, operational, and financial considerations.
* Allocate engineering resources and materials to meet operational and maintenance requirements.
* Plan and schedule maintenance activities to meet production, quality, and legal standards.
* Provide technical support to production and maintenance teams.
* Maintain high safety standards, ensuring all work follows safe systems, permits, and process safety rules.
* Control maintenance spending on labour, materials, and spare parts within the agreed MRO budget.
* Support capital and maintenance projects from design to implementation.
* Develop daily maintenance plans based on operational reviews and coordinate cross-functional resources to deliver them.
* Lead root cause analysis, implement corrective actions, and contribute to reliability improvement initiatives (e.g. FMEA).
* Track and report KPIs (downtime, MTBF, MTTR, shutdown performance, safety) and implement corrective actions when targets are not met.
* Ensure accurate reporting of breakdowns and maintenance history to meet statutory obligations.
* Promote good team relations, manage performance, and encourage continuous improvement and skill development.
* Develop and train team members to ensure coverage, capability, and succession within the department.
An ideal candidate for the Sr Mechanical Maintenance role would have:
* 5 years’ experience in either a supervisory or technical role and must hold one of the following qualifications
* Mechanical Engineering Degree or equivalent HND or HNC
* Will have a strong technical knowledge of mechanical maintenance and engineering principles.
* Should have a sound knowledge of accounting, stores and purchasing systems.
* Good working knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and the application of continuous process environment.
* Highly proficient knowledge of SAP maintenance system.
