NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC)

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non‑clinical professions and roles. The Role

Do you have an interest in occupational therapy in primary care? Are you looking for a development opportunity to measure impact using quality improvement methodology? This is a new adventure for Occupational Therapy in Mental Health for Inverclyde. This post is a test of a change project to introduce occupational therapy in primary care. The postholder will work alongside the Primary Care Mental Health Team to provide evidence-based, solution-focused occupational therapy interventions. Under the guidance and supervision of the Lead Occupational Therapist, the postholder will be expected to embark on a Quality Improvement Programme to demonstrate the effectiveness and uniqueness of the post.


Duration, Location and Working Pattern

* Fixed Term, Full-time for a period of 12 months
* Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:00
* Inverclyde Royal Hospital


Key Responsibilities


Clinical

* Deliver specialist OT assessment and intervention across community and acute mental health settings
* Independently manage a complex caseload, undertake risk assessment, set goals and create/adapt care plans
* Prioritise referrals, support diagnosis, and act as a specialist clinical resource
* Maintain accurate documentation and communicate effectively within MDTs
* Participate in duty rota, including crisis response, and contribute to policy development


Managerial

* Coordinate the daily workload of junior staff and act up for senior staff when required
* Provide supervision, appraisal, support service and policy development
* Manage resources, equipment, health & safety, and support recruitment
* Ensure effective communication within the OT team and wider service


Education & Research

* Maintain specialist knowledge and support staff learning and development
* Lead inservice training and educate MDT colleagues
* Provide quality student placements and participate in research/audit activity


Professional

* Adhere to HCPC/RCOT standards and organisational policies
* Provide specialist advice, promote ethical practice, and ensure culturally sensitive care
* Reflect on and maintain professional competence and support clinical governance
* Supervise and appraise students


Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job


Essential Criteria

* Qualified Occupational Therapist with a Diploma/Degree and HCPC registration
* Holds (or is willing to obtain) a practice education qualification and maintains mandatory training
* Specialist OT knowledge and skills in mental health, supported by relevant courses and multidisciplinary experience
* Strong communication, assessment, observation, and risk‑management abilities
* Able to work independently, prioritise clinical workload, and demonstrate ongoing professional development
* Evidence-based understanding of OT assessments, interventions, outcome measures, and both physical and mental health models
* Good knowledge of relevant health/social care legislation and clinical governance
* Able to build effective networks, manage complex information, and demonstrate basic leadership and supervisory skills
* Experience with audit processes and knowledge of adaptive equipment
* Competent with basic IT systems


Desirable Criteria

* Membership of the British Association of Occupational Therapists
* Ability to analyse professional/ethical issues and apply research critically
* Experience participating in research activities

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full‑time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part‑time working hours will be reduced on a pro‑rated basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
