Job Overview

This is a fixed‑term secondment for 3 months. Applicants must obtain permission from their current line manager prior to applying.

The Cardiology Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs) at Glan Clwyd Hospital provide a high‑quality, nurse‑led service for patients with Acute Coronary Syndromes. They deliver timely care and interventions for ST‑Elevation and Non‑ST‑Elevation Myocardial Infarction across North Wales and run post‑intervention clinics.

The team consists of 6 ANPs (full‑time and part‑time) working closely with the cardiology multidisciplinary team (MDT). They provide inpatient care for acute cardiology patients and outpatient care for those attending the Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic. They offer expert clinical advice, support, education, training and clinical expertise to primary and secondary care staff.

The role requires practicing under supervision as a trainee advanced practitioner within cardiology, encompassing assessment, examination, diagnosis and treatment within an agreed scope of practice.


Main Duties

* Work alongside ANPs coordinating Primary PCI calls.
* Identify patients with acute coronary syndrome within the emergency setting.
* Assist and advise allied health professionals and the MDT on ECGs and treatment of STEMI and ACS.
* Collaborate with CCU and MDT to ensure cardiac patients receive quality care in the correct environment.
* Complete local and national audits.
* Teach junior staff and other MDT members.
* Speak Welsh is desirable; Welsh or English speakers are welcome.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

Full job description and person specification are attached in supporting documents. Key responsibilities include:

* Identify and triage critically ill cardiac patients within the acute setting, especially those requiring PPCI.
* Escort patients throughout the PPCI pathway in support of the Catheter Laboratory Team.
* Develop competence to autonomously run RACPC with responsibility for clinical standards and supervision of other health professionals.
* Advise autonomously on ACS patient management across all hospital areas, including unscheduled care.
* Collaborate with primary care colleagues to understand specialist cardiology services.
* Deliver specialist education and training to nurses, doctors, and ambulance personnel.
* Lead research and clinical audit projects, ensuring compliance with national programs.
* Support the Cardiac Catheter Laboratory in the North Wales Primary Percutaneous Cardiac Intervention Service.
* Recognise patients with changing health status and take appropriate actions.
* Communicate complex and sensitive information with patients, families and within the healthcare team.
* Safely use complex monitoring and support equipment in ED/CCU/Catheter Lab.
* Interpret laboratory and radiological results, initiating appropriate patient management.
* Maintain professional development by staying abreast of new treatments and technologies.
* Review patient care plans with a supervisor to identify and address issues.
* Triage referral patients with suspected ACS, perform comprehensive assessment, and manage transfers and investigations.
* Provide expert advice and liaise with the Emergency Department, Acute Admissions Unit, Cardiac Catheter Laboratory, Coronary Care Unit and Cardiology Ward.


Person Specification


Essential Criteria

* Registered Nurse
* Extensive cardiology experience
* ILS or ALS certification
* Evidence of advanced ECG interpretation


Desirable Criteria

* Willingness to undertake ALS
* Willingness to undertake CCU/Cath lab competencies

* Highly developed communication skills, including persuasive, motivational, negotiation, empathetic and reassurance abilities across all levels.
