Offer description

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our team as an Apprentice Operating Department Practitioner (ODP). We are looking for someone passionate about delivering high quality, patient‑centred care to patients on their perioperative journey.

As an apprentice you will learn while you earn and be employed in a three‑year programme on a fixed‑term contract, undertaking studies towards a BSc ODP at the University of Derby.

Learners will work in the perioperative environment, acquiring the skills, knowledge and behaviours required of the ODP through exposure to appropriate on‑the‑job learning opportunities. Standards are defined by the Health Care Professions Council, the Institute of Apprenticeships and Technical Education.

Students will complete 17 modules of academic study over three years, undertake an end‑of‑module assessment, and must pass all modules at 40% or above to achieve a BSc (Hons) in Operating Practice. They must also achieve clinical competencies, a culminating end‑point assessment at the end of year three to meet apprenticeship requirements.

Apprentices will attend a scheduled annual residency (one week) each year and accommodation will be provided by our academic provider. Recruitment is joint with UHP and the University of Derby. Shortlisted applicants will be contacted with interview information.

Main duties of the job

* Deliver high quality, compassionate care under the direction of a Registered practitioner.
* Maintain professional attitudes and behaviours compatible with NHS Values.
* Work as part of a designated clinical and care team, focusing on patients’ direct needs.
* Carry out specific delegated clinical and care tasks to a high standard and competency, under the direction and supervision of a registered practitioner.
* Collaborate with a supervisor to develop clinical competence, leadership and reflective practice skills throughout placements and the ODP degree apprenticeship.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Job responsibilities

University Hospitals Plymouth (UHP) Apprentice Operating Department Practitioners will be employed as paid staff in Theatre Central. Thirty‑two per cent of contracted hours will be allocated to current employment as a Health Care Support Worker (HCSW) while six per cent of time is for study. The remaining hours are divided between practice placements and continued role duties when in study modules.

They will work collaboratively to maintain patient safety and provide high standards of skilled care and support throughout each stage of the perioperative pathway.

The Apprentice ODP will ensure all activities align with the Association for Perioperative Practice (2021) Standards and Recommendations, and on completion demonstrate meeting HCPC (2023) Standards of Proficiency to be eligible for registration.

They must achieve the education and practice standards set by the HCPC, the Higher Education Institution, and the Institute of Apprenticeships, including an integrated end‑point assessment and completion of the three‑year degree programme. Failure to progress results in removal from the programme.

Commitment to self‑directed study and successful completion of the programme within the contract period is required. The Apprentice ODP will be supported by experienced Practice Supervisors and Practice Assessors in assessed clinical placements.

Upon completion, the ODP will possess the knowledge, understanding, skills, attitudes and behaviours necessary for employment as an ODP and will adhere to a nationally recognised code of conduct.
