NHS Medical & Dental: Locum Consultant

Contract: 6 months (Fixed Term) – Full time, 10 sessions per week

Location: Bristol Royal Infirmary, Town Bristol, UK

Salary: £109,725 – £145,478 Annual (Pro Rata)

Job Overview

This locum appointment is for a consultant in Luminal Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine. The post was created in response to a short‑notice gap. The successful applicant will join a team of 7 Luminal Gastroenterologists and 6 Hepatologists at Bristol Royal Infirmary.


Main Duties

The post holder will deliver high‑quality care to patients with complex Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and intestinal failure, provide a comprehensive therapeutic endoscopy service, and work closely with colleagues in Colorectal, Upper GI, HPB Surgery, and regional Oncology. Responsibilities include independent upper and lower endoscopy, luminal outpatient clinics, inpatient care on the luminal gastroenterology ward (1:4 rotational basis), emergency endoscopy rota (1 in 9), and 5 weekday GIM on‑calls per year. The consultant will also deliver sessions at South Bristol Community Hospital, Weston General Hospital, and other sites.


Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

Joint transition clinics with Paediatrics support the regional Paediatric Gastroenterology service. The department offers therapeutic endoscopy: propofol‑sedated lists, ERCP, EUS, and SpyGlass. An excellent GI physiology unit and a team of Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs) and Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs) specialise in IBD and nutrition.

Sub‑specialty interests within Luminal Gastroenterology are encouraged. The department is academically active with ongoing research programmes and strong links with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England, providing opportunities in research, teaching, and training.


Qualifications & Training

* Full and specialist registration in either AIM or GIM with the General Medical Council (GMC) or eligibility for specialist registration within six months of interview (locum candidates do not need specialist registration)
* Higher academic qualification (e.g., MD, PhD or equivalent)
* UK professional registration required
* Disclosure and Barring Service registration required (Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 exception)


Experience

* Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Acute Medicine
* Ability to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
* Evidence of a special interest and expertise that complements those of other consultants in the department and is consistent with the Trust’s service strategy


Clinical Knowledge and Skills

* Up‑to‑date knowledge and experience of relevant specialty
* Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to specialty
* Broad range of IT skills


Clinical Governance and Audit

* Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies
* Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation
* Positive approach to evidence‑based practice
* Participation in continuing professional development (CPD) scheme and, where relevant, evidence of participation


Research

* Knowledge of the principles involved in research
* Evidence of involvement in research
* Evidence of peer‑reviewed research papers
* Ability to increase the academic profile of the department


Teaching and Training

* Experience of teaching medical students
* Experience of supervising trainees
* Knowledge of teaching to a multidisciplinary team
* Formal teaching qualification
* Evidence of management training and evidence of learning from it
* Ability to organise efficient and smooth running of a specialist service
* Ability to cope with and effectively organise the workload of a consultant
* Ability to practice independently as a consultant
* Ability to take on responsibility and show evidence of leadership
* Ability to work under pressure and cope with setbacks
* Demonstration of knowledge of NHS management structures


Interpersonal, Communication and Team Working Skills

* Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, clinical colleagues, support staff and other colleagues
* Good knowledge of, and ability to use, spoken and written English
* Ability to present effectively to an audience, using a variety of methods, and to respond to questions and queries
* Ability to develop effective working relationships on an individual and multi‑professional basis with all levels of staff both within and across divisions
* Ability to be a flexible team member
