Vida Education, working in partnership with a 'good' Preston Secondary School are looking for a skilled Learning Support Assistant (LSA) with British Sign Language (BSL) experience to work in a specialist Deaf Support Unit.
This is a rewarding role supporting Deaf and hearing-impaired students to access the curriculum, communicate effectively, and build confidence in both mainstream and specialist settings. You will work closely with class teachers and the SEND team to ensure every student can thrive.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE BSL TA ROLE
Provide one-to-one and group support using BSL and Sign-Supported English (SSE).
Translate and interpret spoken English into BSL during lessons.
Adapt resources and activities to meet students’ communication and learning needs.
Support the use of hearing aids, radio aids and assistive technology.
Promote independence, self-advocacy and confidence in Deaf learners.
Contribute to EHCP targets, track progress and share feedback.
Support pastoral care, life skills and Deaf Studies lessons.
Work collaboratively with teachers, parents and external professionals.
Follow safeguarding, equality and inclusion policies at all times.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE BSL TA ROLE
ESSENTIAL:
British Sign Language – minimum Level 2 (ideally Level 3).
Experience supporting Deaf or hearing-impaired young people.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Patience, empathy and resilience.
Commitment to safeguarding and inclusion.
DESIRABLE:
Previous experience in schools or SEN settings.
Knowledge of Deaf culture and the Deaf community.
Record-keeping and progress monitoring experience.
