Job overview

As a Senior Clinical Engineer the post holder will be required to independently undertake commissioning checks, calibration and maintenance of new devices and equipment including syringe pumps, diathermy machines, ventilators, anaesthetic machines and defibrillators.
The post holder when required will supervise Clinical Engineers, trainee Clinical Technologists and Equipment Library Technicians.

The post holder will also be responsible for demonstrating new equipment and devices to clinical staff and updating service records accordingly. He/she will become a lead in medical device connectivity as the technology advances across the Trust e.g. through our E.P.R system


Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for:

* Undertaking the repair, maintenance and repair of high value electronic and mechanical devices and equipment used in the diagnosis and treatment of patients; This will involve advising end users on the acquisition, safe use and disposal of medical devices and other appropriate equipment in line with the MHRA Managing Medical Devices Regulations 2014/2021.
* Ordering parts and accessories for medical devices and equipment.
* Monitoring and rotating stock levels to ensure minimal wastage.
* Reviewing working practices, advising on changes and suggesting efficiency improvements.

Education, Qualifications & Training


Essential criteria

* BEng / BSc/ HND/HNC in Electronics/Engineering or an equivalent combination of qualifications and experience.
* Evidence of regular participation in relevant technical training courses and seminars.


Desirable criteria

* Professional Registration with IPEM and/or RCT


Knowledge and Experience


Essential criteria

* Extensive experience in the repair, maintenance and performance checking of a range of complex specialist medical devices, such as: oInfusion/syringe pumps oDiathermy machines oVentilators oAnaesthesia machines oDefibrillators oPatient monitoring.
* Experience of working with medical device databases
* Practical experience of using a range of test & measuring equipment and of applying electronic / mechanical engineering workshop practices and techniques
* Experience of working in a clinical environment, taking account of patient safety, dignity and infection prevention.
* Experience with networked medical devices - wired and Wi-Fi
* Highly developed knowledge of engineering theory necessary to efficiently diagnose and rectify faults on complex specialist medical devices.
* Knowledge and understanding of the risks to patients and staff arising from the use of a wide range of medical equipment.
* Experience of supervising and developing junior staff.
* Experience of working within a Quality Management System
* Knowledge of MHRA regulations and guidance for Managing Medical Devices Jan 2021
* Knowledge of relevant technical and quality standards and health and safety legislation
* Knowledge of the hazards and safe working practices inc. contamination


Skills and Abilities


Essential criteria

* Ability to competently operate all equipment worked on, in all modes of operation, in order to safely verify correct operation and aid fault diagnosis.
* Advanced electronic engineering skills including the use of test & measuring equipment, handling and assembly of components and boards, fault finding and diagnosis, use of technical manuals and circuit diagrams.
* Mechanical engineering skills including use of test and measuring equipment, assembly and bonding of components, use of technical manuals and drawings.
* Strong IT skills – with MS Office and ability to maintain, interrogate and use advanced features of a complex database, i.e. F2, e-Quip or similar.
* Good organisational, prioritisation and time management skills – to manage work areas and work load.
* Good written and verbal communication skills.
* Ability to supervise and support junior staff and trainees.
* Good customer relations and interpersonal skills. Able to negotiate with nursing, clinical, scientific, and management staff on trust wide issues relating to clinical equipment management
* A full U.K. driving licence and own transport is essential for this post as part of the duties include travel for servicing and repair.
* A good level of physical fitness and dexterity sufficient to perform the duties of the post.
* Willingness and ability to work outside core hours in the rare occasion of an emergency occurring.
* Willingness to continuously develop skills and abilities and to attend in house and external training courses, at base and throughout the UK.
* RCT and IPEM Professional member or the wiliness to complete this professional membership within the probation period.
* Flexibility and ability to adapt to continuously improving systems of working.
