Job Title: Teacher - Post-Primary
Reports to: Principal
Professional Duties
* Exercise of general professional duties
o As a teacher not a principal, carry out professional duties as circumstances may require when employed under a board or a principal.
o If employed by a board without assignment to a specific school, act under the board's direction and the principal of any school where the teacher may work.
* Exercise of particular duties
o Perform duties as assigned by the principal or board, in accordance with any directions reasonably given.
o Carry out tasks such as planning, teaching, assessment, management, health and safety, and more as needed.
* Planning and Preparation
o Plan and prepare courses and lessons.
o Set and mark pupils' work to be carried out in school and elsewhere.
o Assess, record and report on pupil development, progress and attainment.
* General duties
o Promote the progress and well-being of pupils.
o Provide advice and guidance to pupils on educational and social matters and on future careers.
o Make records of pupils’ personal and social needs where appropriate.
o Communicate and consult with parents.
o Co-operate with approved external bodies.
o Participate in meetings relating to pastoral and school-wide activities.
* Assessment / Reporting
o Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references for pupils and groups.
* Staff Development / Professional Development
o Participate in staff development schemes and performance reviews.
o Review teaching methods and programmes of work.
o Participate in own training and professional development as a teacher.
o Advise and co-operate with the principal and colleagues on course preparation, teaching materials, assessment methods and pastoral arrangements.
* Discipline / Health and Safety
o Maintain order and discipline in accordance with school policy.
o Safeguard pupils’ health and safety both inside and outside school premises.
o Participate in meetings relating to curriculum and school organisation.
* Public Examinations
o Prepare pupils for public examinations, assess and report results.
o Supervise pupils during examinations.
* Management Activities / Administration
o Contribute to selection and professional development of other teachers.
o Coordinate or manage the work of other teachers.
o Perform administrative tasks such as ordering and allocating equipment and materials.
o Attend assemblies and register pupil attendance when required.
* Workload
o Full‑time teacher available for 195 teaching days or 1,265 hours per annum.
o Must not supervise more than 25 hours per week in primary/special schools or 23.5 hours per week in secondary schools.
o Required break: at least 30 minutes between 12:00 and 2:00 pm; for nursery schools 12:00 to 2:30 pm.
o No mid‑day supervision unless explicitly required.
* Staff cover
o Provide cover as specified by attendance rules, dependent on enrolment numbers and class type.
* Other duties
o Subject to review and may be assigned as deemed appropriate.
Qualifications & Experience
* Qualifications / Professional Membership
o Hold a recognised teaching qualification for grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland.
o Hold an Honours degree 2:1 or above in an English‑related subject prepared for teaching English and English Literacy.
* Experience
o Teaching experience in English at Key Stage 3 and English Language at Key Stage 4.
o Teaching experience in English Literature at Key Stage 4.
o Deliver effective classroom approaches that support and challenge all learners.
o Ability to contribute to the extra‑curricular programme.
* GTCNI Registration
o Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland before appointment.
* Knowledge
o Current working knowledge of subject‑specific teaching approaches.
o Knowledge of current assessment methods.
* Skills and Abilities
o Effective teaching and classroom management to inspire achievement.
o Collaborate to build positive relationships with pupils, staff, parents and the community.
o Work effectively as a member of a team, motivating self and others.
