About The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of public health and data science, applying analytical expertise to inform decisions that improve population health outcomes in Hounslow.

The Public Health Analyst and Research Officer will provide responsive, high-quality analytical and statistical support to Public Health colleagues, wider Council teams, and partners across the local health and care system. The role will lead and contribute to a range of analytical and research projects that contribute to and influence the development of strategy, service delivery, and targeted interventions.

A strong foundation in statistical methods and experience with relevant analytical tools is essential. The postholder will be expected to work confidently with large and varied datasets, applying advanced quantitative techniques where appropriate to generate insight into population health needs, outcomes, and inequalities. Proficiency in tools such as SQL, R/RStudio, and Power BI is required to ensure robust, reproducible outputs and high analytical standards. The role also benefits from access to patient records across multiple e-health systems, enabling comprehensive analysis of both clinical data and patient movement through the healthcare system.

The role requires the ability to work both independently and collaboratively across multi-disciplinary teams and complex systems. Key responsibilities include sourcing and managing relevant data, designing methodologies, and clearly communicating findings to a range of audiences through accessible reports, dashboards, and visualisations.

The postholder will be supported to continue developing technical skills and knowledge, and will contribute to the team’s commitment to using data-driven approaches to reduce health inequalities and improve outcomes for Hounslow’s population.


About The Team You’ll Be Working In

The role sits within Hounslow’s Behaviour Change and Population Health Management team, a multidisciplinary sub-team in Public Health comprising of analysts, researchers, behavioural scientists, and engagement specialists. The team’s remit is to transform data, research, and insight into actionable intelligence to support evidence-based decision making, service design, and targeted interventions.

Working across the Hounslow Borough Based Partnership, the team contributes to improving population health and reducing health inequalities by supporting a range of projects, such as vaccination uptake, sexual health, NHS Health Checks, falls prevention, and addressing the wider determinants of health. Core methods include both quantitative and qualitative analysis, cohort segmentation, and risk stratification, often using tools such as R, SQL, and Power BI.

The post reports to the Senior Public Health Officer leading on Wider Determinants of Health and Population Health Analysis.


About You

We are seeking a collaborative and innovative individual with expertise in public health, intelligence, and epidemiology, strong advanced analytical skills, and the ability to work effectively in partnership across sectors and organisations. 1. Analytical and Statistical Expertise
You bring strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with proven experience applying statistical and epidemiological methods, for example, regression, segmentation, risk stratification, and cohort analysis to large and complex datasets. You can interrogate data and methodologies, ensure accuracy and reliability in findings, identify patterns and trends, and generate robust findings that directly inform decision-making in public health and healthcare settings.

2. Technical Proficiency in Tools and Methods
You are proficient in a wide range of data and statistical tools, including SQL, R/RStudio, Power BI, Tableau, Excel, and GIS software (e.g. QGIS, MapInfo), and are able to use them to manipulate, analyse, and visualise data effectively. You can produce reproducible, high-quality datasets, dashboards, reports, and automated analyses that support detailed population health intelligence and continuous improvement.

3. Data Management and Population Health Intelligence
You have experience sourcing, managing, and integrating diverse datasets, including NHS, local government, social care, demographic, or wider determinants of health data. You can combine these effectively to provide meaningful interpretation, develop evidence-based insights, and support evidence-based planning. You also bring a strong understanding of population health, public health intelligence, health inequalities, and the UK health and care system, with a commitment to using data to reduce inequalities and improve outcomes.

4. Communication and Presentation Skills
You are able to clearly and accessibly present complex analysis and findings to both technical and non-technical audiences. Using a range of formats, including dashboards, reports, visualisations, written summaries, and verbal presentations, you can translate results into clear, actionable insights that support understanding and decision-making across a wide range of stakeholders.

5. Collaboration, Teamwork and Problem-Solving
You work effectively both independently and in multidisciplinary teams, demonstrating adaptability, initiative, and problem-solving skills. You collaborate with colleagues and partners to understand priorities and translate them into clear researchable questions, ensuring analytical work is relevant and impactful. You have delivered analytical projects that inform evidence-based planning, commissioning, and interventions, while developing strong, productive relationships. You are committed to innovation, maintaining data quality, and building partnerships that achieve better public health outcomes.
