Power Electronics Design Engineer – Switch Mode Power Supplies (SMPS)
Location: Devon, England | Full-time | Hybrid
**No recent graduates please**
Are you passionate about designing reliable, high-performance switch mode power supplies for demanding applications?
Do you want to work for one of Europe's leading electronics companies with the best testing and production equipment money can buy?
We are seeking a Power Electronics Design Engineer to lead the design and development of custom power supplies used in the most demanding industries.
Your Role
You will be responsible for the end-to-end design of switch mode power supplies — from requirements capture and topology selection through to qualification and handover to manufacturing. Working within a multidisciplinary R&D team, you’ll balance performance, cost, and compliance while driving innovation in compact, efficient power design.
Key responsibilities include:
* Design, develop and qualify custom power supplies or modified standard products.
* Select and implement appropriate topologies (Flyback, Forward, Half-Bridge, resonant, etc.) based on specification and performance needs.
* Prototype, test, and verify designs — ensuring compliance with safety and EMC standards.
* Provide PCB layout guidance and collaborate with CAD and mechanical engineers for robust, thermally sound designs.
* Define and maintain design specifications and support RFQs with technical input and cost analysis.
* Monitor and communicate project status, milestones, and cost performance across the organisation.
* Support DVT testing and oversee validation carried out by junior engineers.
* Identify risks, report deviations from project plans, and propose recovery strategies.
About You
* BEng / MEng / MSc in Electrical or Electronic Engineering (or equivalent experience).
* Hands-on experience designing SMPS using topologies such as Flyback, Forward, Half-Bridge, or resonant converters.
* Familiar with safety and EMC standards relevant to industrial or aerospace power systems.
* Strong analytical and prototyping skills — confident moving from theory to working hardware.
* Comfortable preparing technical reports, specifications, and cost breakdowns.
* Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work collaboratively in a fast-moving development environment.
Why Join
* Work on challenging, high-value power electronics projects with tangible impact.
* Join an established and supportive engineering team that values precision, quality, and innovation.
* Competitive salary, flexible work arrangements, and opportunities for technical growth.
