Job Overview

We have two exciting opportunities for experienced Emergency Department nurses to join UHS in innovative Band 5 joint ED/Research roles.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

Main Duties

These posts offer a unique chance to continue delivering high quality emergency care while developing new skills in clinical research, working half of your time within the Emergency Department and half with the Research & Development Trust Wide team. The roles are designed to strengthen the link between frontline emergency care and high quality research activity, ensuring patients in the ED have improved opportunities to access research that can directly influence their treatment and outcomes. As part of this dual specialty model, you will combine your clinical expertise with research delivery skills to support safe, timely and compassionate care for some of our most acutely unwell patients.

University Hospital Southampton is one of England’s largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations. Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

At UHS we’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients. We proudly champion individuality and diversity, creating an anti‑racist, anti‑discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe and empowered.

In the Emergency Department, you will maintain a minimal of 18 months experience in emergency medicine and urgent care and will provide evidence‑based nursing care within a fast‑paced, supportive environment. In your research role, you will assist with identifying, screening, and recruiting patients into clinical studies; support the delivery of study‑related procedures; and ensure all activity follows protocols, regulatory standards and UHS research governance processes. Full training will be provided, but a keen interest in research is required.

You will collaborate with both ED staff and the Research team, working with Research Nurses, Principal Investigators, clinicians, and operational colleagues.
