Offer description

About Exergy3:

Exergy3 is a pioneering company specialising in ultra-high temperature thermal energy storage technology, with a mission to drive the decarbonisation of heat across Europe and beyond. As a spin-out from the University of Edinburgh, we are at the forefront of clean heat innovation, providing scalable, efficient, and cost-effective decarbonisation solutions for industrial processes and large-scale building heating.

We are now seeking to hire two outstanding scientists (one in Edinburgh, one in Munich) who can help drive our future ambitions forward.

Exergy3 has already delivered a unique thermal energy storage system, capable of achieving storage temperatures above 1,200 °C and delivering heat at industrially relevant scales and temperatures. However, this represents only the beginning of what this class of decarbonisation technology can achieve.

Our ambition is to develop solutions that enable the full decarbonisation and electrification of heat across all major sectors. This includes applications such as steel and cement production, food and beverage processing, chemical manufacturing, heating across all scales, and power generation in thermal power plants. Collectively, these sectors account for an estimated 50–60% of global carbon emissions.

While we have successfully deployed our technology to Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 8, there remains a significant opportunity to further advance performance and expand applicability. Research and development is therefore a core pillar of our strategy. We aim to operate at higher temperatures, achieve greater energy density, and deliver higher-temperature heat to an increasing range of industrial processes we can decarbonise.

Job Overview:

We are looking for Two highly motivated and technically rigorous Senior Scientist to join our growing team in Edinburgh. You will play a critical role in advancing the scientific understanding of our thermal energy storage systems, leading both numerical and experimental investigations into

Material behaviour, heat transfer and fluid flow. This role bridges fundamental research with applied engineering, supporting development from early-stage concepts through to prototype demonstration.

We are seeking to hire two Senior Scientists to support the breadth of our R&D activities. These roles may naturally align with complementary skillsets—for example, one with a numerical modelling focus and another with a more experimental background. However, we remain flexible in our approach to hiring and will prioritise individuals based on their overall capability rather than strictly defined profiles. If your background is entirely within universities or industrial R&D we are open to either

Our primary criteria are the ability to deeply understand complex physical science problems, develop novel and innovative solutions, and communicate these effectively to others. Crucially, candidates must be able to translate scientific insight into practical outcomes—ensuring that ideas can be deployed, scaled, and applied in real-world settings.

Requirements

Qualifications & Experience:

· PhD in a relevant physical science discipline (e.g. Mechanical Engineering, Electrical, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or similar)

· Expertise in numerical modelling of heat transfer and/or fluid flow, or experimental work involving heat transfer and/or fluid flow

· Experience conducting rigorous scientific research and experiments from concept through to validation

· Ability to work across multidisciplinary teams, including engineering and technical functions

· Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal

Key Responsibilities:

As a Senior Scientist you will work closely with the Chief Science Officer, the wider engineering team, technicians, to deliver rigorous research driving to increased technology performance and applicability.

Scientific Research & Modelling

· Develop numerical or physical models of thermal and fluid systems (e.g. CFD, reduced-order models)

· Perform modelling of heat transfer, thermos-mechanical and fluid flow

· Support performance prediction and optimisation of thermal energy storage systems

· Design and execute lab-scale experiments to validate models

· Develop experimental setups, instrumentation, and measurement methodologies

· Analyse experimental data and derive actionable insights

· Contribute to R&D activities across TRL 1–7

· Support scaling from lab experiments to prototype systems

· Support prototype testing and system validation

Technology Development & Prototyping

· Contribute to prototype design, build, and demonstration activities

· Work closely with engineers to integrate scientific findings into system design

· Support troubleshooting and performance improvement of systems

· Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders

· Document findings in reports, presentations, and technical documentation

· Write or contribute to patents.

Collaboration & Communication

· Communicate technical insights clearly to multidisciplinary teams

· Contribute to knowledge sharing and internal processes

· Support development of IP and technical outputs where appropriate

Desirable Additional Skills

· Engineering or physical sciences background (mechanical, chemical or electrical)

· Programming and coding experience (Python, MATLAB, C++)

· Experience performing R&D across TRL 1–7, including simulations

· Experience with lab-scale testing, prototyping, and demonstrations

Useful Experience

· Energy systems and energy storage

· Thermal engineering and heat transfer

· Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)

· Engineering design and product development

· High-temperature thermal systems

· Thermos-mechanical material, component or system modelling
