Cloud Platform Engineering Lead
A high performing London Market Syndicate is looking for a Cloud Platform Engineering Lead to join them on a permanent basis. This is an excellent business to join as they are consistent ranked in the top quartile for performance across the market.
The Role
This is a senior, hands-on leadership role at the heart of their technology function. You will own the cloud platform end-to-end — its architecture, automation, security controls, and the day-to-day experience of the engineers who rely on it. Working alongside a Cloud Services Partner, you will retain strong internal accountability for quality and direction, guiding that partner with confidence while shaping the long-term cloud strategy of the business.
Responsibilities
* Own and evolve the cloud platform architecture — primarily Azure — ensuring it is secure, scalable, and resilient, aligned to Landing Zones and the Well Architected Framework.
* Remain hands-on in the build and evolution of the platform through Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), CI/CD pipelines, and reusable platform modules.
* Treat the cloud environment as a product — maintaining clear standards, roadmaps, and a continuous improvement mindset as the platform evolves.
* Embed security by design across the platform, owning cloud security controls, policies, and technical guardrails in line with standards such as NIST and ISO.
* Lead cloud cost management and FinOps practices, ensuring performance, availability, and spend are optimised and transparent.
* Act as the senior technical escalation point for cloud security incidents and major outages, ensuring high availability, backup, and disaster recovery are engineered into the platform.
* Direct and manage the Cloud Services Partner with authority, ensuring focus on high-priority items and the consistent quality of their deliveries.
Role Requirements
* 8+ years of hands-on experience designing and operating cloud environments, with deep Azure expertise (AWS experience is a bonus).
* Proven, hands-on experience building and owning cloud platforms using Terraform, including full lifecycle management of IaC assets.
* Strong understanding of cloud security, identity, networking, CI/CD, DevOps, containers, and modern deployment patterns.
* Experience working in a regulated or security-sensitive environment, with a good grasp of compliance and governance requirements.
* Excellent communication skills — able to direct external partners, collaborate with Architecture, Security, and IT Operations, and influence senior stakeholders.
* Experience with traditional on-premises infrastructure — particularly networking — is a valuable addition, and one many strong candidates will bring.
This is an excellent opportunity to join a well respected business as they look to grow out their Cloud function.
